Chapter 13 - THE MAN IN THE CLINICThe clinic was supposed to be abandoned.

It wasn't.
An elderly guard admitted us after Ethan showed his credentials.
The building smelled of bleach and old paper.
A nurse led us downstairs.
Room 17.
The door was locked.
Ethan opened it.
A man sat beside the window.
Thin.
Gray hair.
Older than I remembered.
He turned.
I knew him instantly.
My knees nearly gave out.
“Dad?”
The man stood.
His face changed.
“Lauren.”
I couldn't move.
The man who had been declared dead eighteen years ago was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Broken.
My father.
Richard Bennett.
He crossed the room slowly.
“I thought I'd never see you again.”
I started crying.
He hugged me.
For a moment, everything disappeared.
The apartment.
Victoria.
Daniel.
The money.
The lies.
All of it.
There was only the man who had taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who used to read to me before bed.
The man whose death I had mourned for eighteen years.
Then Ethan asked the question.
“Why were you hidden?”
My father looked at him.
“Because Daniel wanted my daughter.”
My heart tightened.
“Why?”
“Because you are the key to the Mercer estate.”
He explained everything.
He had discovered that Daniel was stealing from Vera's family trust.
He confronted him.
Daniel responded by threatening Vera.
My father tried to protect her.
Then Daniel staged a fake death.
My father disappeared.
Vera was forced underground.
But Daniel found her.
She was killed.
My father survived because he escaped.
He had been held under surveillance for years.
“Why didn't you contact me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Several times.”
“Why couldn't you?”
“Because every time I tried, someone found me.”
He looked at Ethan.
“Daniel has people everywhere.”
Ethan's face remained controlled.
“Who helped you?”
My father hesitated.
“Elise.”
My breath caught.
“She found me five years ago.”
“So she knew you were alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“Because you were being watched.”
My father's voice broke.
“Anyone who contacted you was in danger.”
Then he told us the real meaning of 2031.
It wasn't just the trust maturity date.
It was the date Daniel's control ended permanently.
But only if I remained legally competent and in possession of my identity.
Meaning:
If I was declared mentally incapable.
If I disappeared.
If someone impersonated me.
If I appeared to voluntarily transfer assets.
The trust could be challenged.
And Daniel could seize everything.
“Then he doesn't need to kill me.”
“No.”
My father looked at me.
“He only needs to destroy your identity.”
My stomach dropped.
The fake lease.
The forged power of attorney.
The photographs.
The woman pretending to be me.
Everything was part of the same plan.
Then the clinic lights went out.
Ethan drew his weapon.
A gunshot exploded somewhere upstairs.
My father grabbed my arm.
“Lauren, run.”
Another shot.
A door slammed.
Then the emergency lights came on.
A figure stood at the end of the hallway.
Elise.
She shouted:
“DON'T TRUST YOUR FATHER!”
My father froze.
Ethan turned.
Elise pointed a gun toward us.
Her eyes were full of tears.
“Daniel found you.”
May you like
Then she whispered:
“And he's already inside the building.”
