Chapter 13 - The Man Behind the FamilyEverything I believed about my family had been built on lies.

My grandfather had supposedly died before I was born.

Yet he appeared in photographs taken after my birth.

My father had supposedly died twenty years ago.

Yet he had been living in the shadows.

Anna had supposedly died.

Lauren had supposedly disappeared.

My mother had supposedly known nothing.

Every truth had a second truth underneath it.

Harris stared at the photograph.

“Victor Collins founded the network?”

My father nodded.

“He built it.”

“Why?”

“To control contracts.”

“Then it became something else.”

“A machine.”

My father explained.

At first, the network had been financial.

Bribery.

Fraud.

Shell companies.

Then Victor expanded.

He bought hospitals.

Judges.

Police commanders.

Politicians.

He learned one terrifying lesson.

Money could buy people.

Fear could buy institutions.

And secrets could buy both.

Margaret inherited the network through marriage.

Daniel inherited part of it from his mother.

But another branch existed.

The Collins branch.

My father had tried to leave.

Anna had tried to expose it.

Lauren had kept the women's records.

And I had been raised as the one child who was never supposed to know.

Then the phone rang.

Not Margaret.

Victor.

An unknown number.

My father stared.

“Don't answer.”

I answered.

Silence.

Then:

“You have your father's voice.”

I froze.

“Grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“How are you alive?”

“I was never dead.”

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

The line went dead.

Harris immediately traced the signal.

“Old courthouse district.”

We drove.

The building had been abandoned since a fire ten years earlier.

Inside, a single light was on.

We entered.

Victor sat behind a desk.

Older.

Thin.

But alive.

My grandfather looked at me.

“You became a police officer.”

“You built the system I swore to fight.”

He smiled.

“Systems are not evil.”

“People are.”

“No.”

He folded his hands.

“Systems are useful.”

I raised my weapon.

“You hurt my sister.”

“Which one?”

The question made me stop.

Anna stepped beside me.

Victor looked at her.

“Still dramatic.”

Anna's face hardened.

“You tried to kill me.”

“I corrected a mistake.”

Lauren stepped forward.

“You murdered women.”

Victor looked at her.

“No.”

“I created opportunities.”

“People made choices.”

I stared.

That was how he justified everything.

Not murder.

Not coercion.

Choices.

He slid a file across the desk.

“Open it.”

Inside were documents.

My birth records.

The real ones.

Margaret's name.

Victor's signature.

A payment.

TRANSFER OF MARA COLLINS.

I looked up.

“You sold me.”

“No.”

“I was six?”

“Six weeks.”

My hands shook.

Victor continued.

“Margaret couldn't keep you.”

“She was already under investigation.”

“She needed you hidden.”

“You mean protected.”

“No.”

His eyes were cold.

“You were leverage.”

I felt sick.

“What did you plan to do with me?”

“Nothing.”

“You knew I would grow up.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because people protect blood.”

He leaned closer.

“I knew Margaret would never expose the network if you lived outside it.”

My whole childhood suddenly made sense.

Christmas gifts.

Birthday cards.

Unexpected payments.

Private tuition.

The strangers watching us.

The phone calls my mother never explained.

It had never been affection.

It had been surveillance.

Victor stood.

“You should come home.”

“This is home.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Home is wherever the family controls the door.”

A gunshot cracked.

Victor's body jerked.

We ducked.

Glass exploded.

Sniper.

Harris pushed everyone behind cover.

When we looked back, Victor was gone.

A hidden door stood open behind the desk.

On the floor lay a final note.

I picked it up.

THE NETWORK DOES NOT END WITH VICTOR.

Below that:

IT ENDS WITH MARA.

My phone buzzed.

A live video.

Margaret stood beside Emily.

But this time she held a gun to her own daughter's head.

And beside them stood Daniel.

He was no longer smiling.

He looked terrified.

Margaret turned toward the camera.

“Mara.”

“Come to the estate.”

Daniel looked at me.

May you like

And mouthed two words.

Save me.
