Chapter 11 - The Police BarricadeThe first officer through the door wore a SWAT helmet.

He shouted:

“Drop your weapons!”

Harris stepped forward.

“Identify yourself.”

“State tactical.”

Harris looked at me.

He didn't believe them.

Neither did I.

The uniforms were wrong.

Small details.

Wrong shoulder patches.

Wrong radio placement.

Wrong boot style.

Professional impersonators.

“Don't shoot,” I whispered.

Harris understood.

We moved deeper into the hospital.

My father could barely walk.

Lauren knew a maintenance route.

Anna covered the rear.

Emily stayed with me.

We reached an old surgery wing.

Locked doors.

Dust.

Broken equipment.

Then I saw something.

A red emergency phone.

I picked it up.

Nothing.

I slammed it again.

Static.

Then a voice.

“Hello, Mara.”

Margaret Alden.

Evelyn Mercer.

The Architect.

“You've caused quite a mess.”

I looked around.

“Where are you?”

“Watching.”

“You have Emily's blood on your hands.”

“So does your father.”

My father stared at the phone.

She continued.

“He betrayed us.”

My father whispered:

“You killed Anna.”

“No.”

Her voice was almost amused.

“Daniel tried.”

“You covered it up.”

“I protected the business.”

I felt rage rise.

“What business?”

“Control.”

The word echoed.

“People believe power is about money.”

“It isn't.”

“It's about deciding which version of the truth survives.”

I looked at the ledger.

“You're finished.”

She laughed.

“Do you really think that book is enough?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She sounded genuinely amused.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“The names inside the ledger are only the people we paid.”

A pause.

“The people who matter most aren't named.”

“Then who?”

“People who volunteered.”

Harris went silent.

“What do you want?”

“Anna.”

“No.”

“Then your mother dies.”

Emily gasped.

“What?”

My blood froze.

“You took Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Your family home.”

I looked at my father.

He closed his eyes.

“She knows where you are.”

Margaret continued:

“She always did.”

The line went dead.

Then my phone received another video.

My mother sat in a chair.

Alive.

A man stood behind her.

Daniel.

He was smiling.

And beside him was Captain Reeves.

Emily whispered:

“She's doing this to make you choose.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“But what do we do?”

I looked at Anna.

Anna was crying.

“She wants me.”

“Yes.”

“She'll kill Mom.”

“Yes.”

“She'll kill Emily.”

“Yes.”

“And you.”

“Yes.”

Lauren stepped forward.

“There is another way.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The first ledger is not the only ledger.”

“What?”

“The women kept their own records.”

“Where?”

“Under the hospital.”

I stared.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

“What do they contain?”

“Names.”

“Of everyone.”

“Every officer. Every judge. Every politician.”

“Why haven't they been found?”

Lauren looked at my father.

“Because your father hid them.”

I turned.

“Dad?”

He nodded weakly.

“Below the morgue.”

We found the access hatch.

Beneath it was a corridor.

At the end stood a steel vault.

My father's key opened it.

Inside were boxes.

Thousands of pages.

Photographs.

Audio tapes.

Bank records.

Medical files.

Everything.

Harris stared.

“This could bring down half the city.”

“Not if Reeves gets it.”

We needed to get it out.

Then my father said:

“Mara.”

I turned.

He pointed to one box.

“Read the red file.”

I opened it.

My name was on the cover.

Inside was an adoption record.

Emily looked over my shoulder.

I froze.

The document stated:

MARIA COLLINS, FEMALE, AGE 6, TRANSFERRED TO COLLINS FAMILY UNDER PRIVATE ARRANGEMENT.

My name wasn't Maria.

But the birth date was mine.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Anna looked at the paper.

Then at my father.

“No.”

My father whispered:

“You were not our biological daughter.”

Silence.

Emily took a step back.

“Then who is she?”

May you like

My father looked at me.

“Margaret Alden's daughter.”
