Chapter 14 - The memory came in pieces.A room without windows.

Six officers.
A screen.
A map.
A folder marked BLACK RIVER.
And me.
Younger.
Colder.
Standing beside Colonel Adrian Cole.
He had said:
“Once you sign, there's no going back.”
My younger self answered:
“I know.”
Then I signed.
But the memory didn't end there.
There was a second document.
A transfer order.
A genetic archive.
A list of names.
And one line:
PROJECT SUCCESSOR: CLAIRE BENNETT.
I screamed.
Everyone stopped.
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
“Claire.”
I pushed him away.
“I remember.”
My mother closed her eyes.
“What?”
“I signed the order.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You didn't.”
“I did.”
“You were under conditioning.”
“That doesn't matter.”
“It does.”
I looked at him.
“You lied.”
“I lied to keep you alive.”
“You let me blame everyone.”
“You would have killed yourself trying to find the truth.”
I stepped closer.
“You should have trusted me.”
He looked broken.
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing you.”
The tunnel went silent.
I looked at Logan.
He had heard everything.
“What does this mean?”
I answered honestly.
“I don't know.”
We reached the end of the tunnel.
A helicopter flew overhead.
My mother looked up.
“They found us.”
Then a voice echoed through the entrance.
“Claire!”
Victor.
Again.
I stepped into the open.
Victor stood with armed men.
Grant was beside him.
Bound.
Bloodied.
Victor pointed a gun at him.
“Give me the archive.”
My mother whispered:
“Don't.”
Victor smiled.
“You still think your daughter will obey you.”
I looked at him.
“What do you want?”
“The original files.”
“They're encrypted.”
“You have the key.”
I frowned.
“What key?”
He tapped his temple.
“You.”
I understood.
The conditioning.
The memories.
My brain had been used as the final encryption key.
Victor didn't need a password.
He needed me to remember.
I looked at Logan.
“Get everyone out.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Logan.”
“I stay.”
“This isn't your fight.”
“Yes, it is.”
He looked at Victor.
“You built my life.”
He looked at Daniel.
“You lied to me.”
Then at me.
“But you're the first person who told me the truth.”
He clenched his jaw.
“So I'm staying.”
Victor smiled.
“Family reunion.”
Grant suddenly laughed.
Victor looked at him.
“What?”
Grant raised his head.
“You still don't understand.”
Victor's smile faded.
Grant looked at me.
“Claire.”
He whispered:
“Your mother never completed the program.”
I stared.
“What?”
“The final subject wasn't Logan.”
Grant smiled weakly.
“It was Victor.”
Victor's expression changed.
Grant continued.
“Your mother's research was supposed to teach humans to control fear.”
He coughed.
“Victor wanted to remove it.”
I stared at Victor.
“That isn't possible.”
“He tried.”
My mother nodded.
“He failed.”
Victor's eyes hardened.
“I succeeded.”
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“You became incapable of understanding fear.”
Victor smiled.
“Exactly.”
My mother looked at me.
“That's why he's dangerous.”
“He doesn't feel fear?”
“He doesn't recognize consequences.”
Victor raised the gun.
“And you still do.”
He fired.
I moved.
The bullet struck the wall.
Logan attacked.
Daniel pulled Grant behind cover.
Sarah grabbed my mother.
The world exploded into movement.
I didn't fight Victor head-on.
I watched.
He moved like someone trained.
But without fear.
No hesitation.
No retreat.
No instinct to preserve himself.
That made him dangerous.
I changed tactics.
I led him toward the tunnel.
He followed.
Exactly as expected.
I stopped at the narrowest point.
Victor lunged.
I pivoted.
He crashed into the wall.
I locked his arm.
He twisted free.
We stared at each other.
“You taught me this,” I said.
Victor smiled.
“No.”
He whispered:
“Your mother did.”
Then he slammed his head into mine.
Pain flashed white.
I stumbled.
He raised the gun.
Logan stepped between us.
Victor hesitated.
Just one second.
Enough.
Daniel fired.
Victor dropped.
Silence.
I thought it was over.
Then Victor laughed.
Blood ran from his mouth.
“You still haven't figured it out.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
He smiled.
“Your son.”
I glanced at Logan.
Victor whispered:
“Ask him what he did with the ledger.”
Logan's face changed.
I stared at him.
“What ledger?”
He didn't answer.
“Logan?”
He looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time since we'd met...
he looked afraid.
