Chapter 13 - My mother looked smaller than I remembered. Not weak.

Small.

Age had reduced her body but sharpened her eyes.

She touched my face.

“You've been living under the Bennett name.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“You know who I am?”

“I know exactly who you are.”

I wanted to scream.

“Then why did you let me believe you were dead?”

“Because dead women are rarely hunted.”

“You let me mourn you.”

“I let you survive.”

I looked around the room.

Old servers.

Documents.

Photographs.

Maps.

A complete archive.

Twenty years of secrets.

“You built this.”

“Yes.”

“The program.”

“Yes.”

I took a step backward.

“You experimented on children.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“You used Logan.”

“No.”

“Lena.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

She looked at me.

“Victor.”

“Victor stole the research.”

“He corrupted it.”

My mother walked toward a cabinet.

“He turned a medical project into a weapons program.”

I stared.

“What medical project?”

“Trauma resilience.”

She opened the cabinet.

Inside were my childhood records.

Not just mine.

Logan's.

Lena's.

Evan's.

I froze.

“Why Evan?”

She smiled sadly.

“Because you had another child.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“Evan was conceived naturally.”

I frowned.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“The program ended.”

“But you tracked him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he inherited something too.”

“From me?”

“From both sides.”

I stared.

“Which side?”

She hesitated.

“Pattern recognition.”

Evan stepped into the room.

“My whole life I've noticed things.”

My mother nodded.

“You see connections others ignore.”

Evan looked around.

“So that's why.”

“Yes.”

Logan entered behind him.

My mother looked at him.

Her expression changed.

“You.”

Logan frowned.

“What?”

She walked toward him.

“You look exactly like your father.”

“Grant?”

“No.”

She touched his shoulder.

“Your biological father.”

Logan froze.

“Who?”

My mother looked at me.

I felt sick.

She said:

“Daniel Mercer.”

Silence.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

He looked destroyed.

Logan stared at him.

“No.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I never knew.”

My mother nodded.

“Because I wasn't supposed to tell you.”

Logan looked at me.

Then Daniel.

Then Elena.

“You knew?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Daniel whispered:

“I swear.”

Logan backed away.

His whole identity was collapsing.

His father wasn't his father.

His mother had lied.

His DNA came from an Army officer.

His childhood had been manufactured.

He looked at me.

“And you're my mother.”

“Yes.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Great.”

Then he punched the wall.

His knuckles split.

I grabbed him.

“Logan.”

He shoved me away.

“Don't.”

His eyes filled.

“You don't get to be my mother just because a file says so.”

I nodded.

“You're right.”

He looked at me.

“I don't know how to do this.”

“Neither do I.”

That answer stopped him.

I stepped closer.

“So we'll figure it out.”

He looked at me.

For the first time, the anger left his face.

Then a siren sounded above us.

My mother turned.

“They're here.”

“Who?”

“The government.”

Daniel stiffened.

“What government?”

She looked at him.

“The one Victor sold everything to.”

The building shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Evan looked at the archive.

“There has to be an exit.”

My mother smiled.

“There is.”

She opened another door.

A tunnel.

“Where does it go?”

“Outside town.”

We moved.

Halfway through the tunnel, my mother stopped.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“One thing you need to know.”

“What?”

“I was not the one who ordered Black River.”

“Then who?”

She pointed at Daniel.

“Ask him.”

Daniel froze.

I turned toward him.

“No.”

My mother continued.

“Daniel wasn't the traitor.”

“Then what?”

“He was the witness.”

Daniel looked at me.

“And the person who gave the order was you.”

I stared.

“What?”

She whispered:

“You signed it.”

I shook my head.

“I never signed anything.”

My mother looked directly into my eyes.

“Not this Claire.”

She pointed at my head.

“The Claire they trained twenty years ago.”

A flash of memory hit me.

A room.

A table.

A document.

My own hand holding a pen.

A voice saying:

“Proceed.”

I fell to my knees.

May you like

And suddenly I remembered.

I had ordered Black River.
