Chapter 9 - The Father I Never KnewThe man standing at the bottom of the stairs looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.

He was neatly dressed.

Gray suit.

Silver tie.

No visible weapon.

He even smiled.

"Stephanie."

I couldn't move.

Mom whispered,

"Caleb."

He looked at her.

"Evelyn."

Tyler stood behind him.

My heart jolted.

"Tyler!"

Caleb placed a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"He's fine."

"Let him go."

"You're misunderstanding."

"Let him go."

Tyler looked confused.

"Grandma?"

Caleb sighed.

"I don't enjoy this any more than you do."

Victor stepped in front of me.

"You were supposed to be dead."

"That story was useful."

Daniel stared at him.

"You've been manipulating the loans."

"Correct."

"The shell companies."

"Some."

"The medical records."

Caleb smiled.

"Not all."

I found my voice.

"Why me?"

His expression changed.

"Because your father loved you."

"Richard."

Caleb shook his head.

"You're still calling him your father."

"He raised me."

"That's not what I asked."

My heart hammered.

Caleb continued.

"Richard was a decent man. He was also a thief."

Victor stepped forward.

"You don't get to rewrite history."

Caleb ignored him.

"Your mother had an affair with me before you were born."

Mom closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

"Tell me he's lying."

She couldn't.

That was enough.

The floor seemed to tilt beneath me.

Caleb continued.

"Richard found out."

"Then why did he raise me?"

"Because he loved you."

Mom began sobbing.

Caleb looked at her.

"And because he promised to keep you safe."

"From you?"

"From the Mercer family."

"What did that mean?"

Caleb reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folded document.

"Your birth certificate was amended."

I stared.

"You changed it?"

"No."

"Then who?"

"Richard."

Daniel looked at the paper.

"It was legally sealed."

Caleb smiled faintly.

"Everything can be unsealed."

He handed it to me.

The document showed my original surname.

Mercer.

Stephanie Mercer.

I felt sick.

"Why did Dad hide this?"

"Because my father wanted you."

"Your father?"

Caleb nodded.

"Victor's older brother."

Victor stiffened.

"Martin."

"Yes."

I looked at Victor.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"How long?"

"Twenty years."

My eyes filled with tears.

"So my entire childhood was a lie."

"No," Victor said. "Richard loved you. That part was real."

Caleb smiled.

"That's why Richard created the trust."

He pointed at me.

"Not to reward you."

"Then why?"

"To hide the evidence that could destroy the Mercer family."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Where is it?"

Caleb looked at him.

"You still serve Richard from the grave."

"Yes."

"That's admirable."

"What's inside the trust?"

Caleb looked at me.

"Records."

"Of what?"

"Money laundering."

"By whom?"

"Your biological grandfather."

I stared.

"And my father?"

"Richard discovered it."

"And he tried to expose them."

"Yes."

"Then why did he die?"

Caleb's smile disappeared.

"Because he was going to testify."

Mom whispered,

"They killed him."

Caleb looked at her.

"Don't pretend innocence."

Her face collapsed.

"I didn't know."

"You knew enough."

I turned toward Mom.

"You helped them."

She shook her head.

"I tried to stop them."

"You stole from Dad."

"I was paying them to keep them away from you."

"You lied about Lily."

"I was terrified."

"Did you know someone would poison her?"

Mom froze.

Caleb looked at her.

"She didn't."

I stared at him.

"Then who did?"

Caleb's expression became unreadable.

"That's what the recording will tell you."

I looked toward the attic.

"The recording."

He nodded.

"Richard hid a second copy."

"Where?"

"You already saw it."

I couldn't understand.

Then I remembered.

The photograph.

The watch.

The black car.

My daughter's backpack.

The old greenhouse.

My father's line:

Your daughter will.

I whispered,

"Lily found it."

Caleb nodded.

"She found the original ledger."

My body went cold.

"Where?"

Caleb pointed upstairs.

"The nursery."

My heart stopped.

We ran.

The nursery had been untouched for three years.

Lily's bed.

Her books.

Her yellow curtains.

I entered slowly.

My eyes landed on the wooden toy chest.

Inside was nothing.

Then I noticed a loose floorboard beneath the bed.

Victor pried it up.

Underneath was a metal box.

Inside was a tiny digital recorder.

Daniel pressed play.

Lily's voice filled the room.

"Mommy says I shouldn't tell Grandma."

I froze.

Another voice came through.

My own.

But younger.

Terrified.

"Who told you to say that?"

Lily whispered,

"Grandma."

Then another voice.

A man's voice.

Calm.

"Give me the notebook, sweetheart."

Lily answered,

"No."

The recording ended.

Mom screamed.

Because she recognized the man's voice.

"So do I," she whispered.

I turned.

"Who is it?"

Mom looked at Caleb.

Then at Daniel.

Finally she said,

"It's Mike's father-in-law."

Daniel's face went white.

"That man died eight years ago."

Mom shook her head.

"No."

"He did."

"No."

She pointed at the recording.

"That voice belongs to the man who is still alive."

Everyone stared at her.

"Who?"

May you like

She whispered,

"My doctor."
