Chapter 12 - The Boy Who Heard EverythingThe farmhouse had no visible cameras.

But there were microphones everywhere.
We searched room after room.
Nothing.
Then I heard tapping.
Three knocks.
I froze.
Three knocks had always been Lily's signal when she was hiding during games.
I followed the sound.
Behind a bookshelf was a narrow door.
Inside was Tyler.
Alive.
Terrified.
Mike was unconscious beside him.
I rushed forward.
Tyler grabbed my wrist.
"Don't wake Dad."
"Who did this?"
He looked at me.
"I know."
"Who?"
"My mom."
I froze.
"Irene?"
He nodded.
"She told me not to tell anyone."
"Tell me everything."
Tyler's breathing was fast.
"She said Grandma was trying to help us."
"Help you do what?"
"Get money."
"From Dad?"
"From Grandpa."
My heart stopped.
"Your grandfather?"
He nodded.
"She said Grandpa left a secret account."
"Richard?"
"Yes."
"But my father died."
"Mom said that's why nobody would know."
I sat beside him.
"What else?"
Tyler swallowed.
"She told me Grandma hated you."
"Why?"
"Because Grandpa chose you."
I closed my eyes.
"So the soda..."
"Mom told me to say it."
"Did Grandma tell you?"
Tyler shook his head.
"Mom did."
That explained it.
The humiliation had been staged.
A message designed to make me angry enough to surrender the trust.
But why public?
Why that specific phrase?
"Because she wanted me to leave."
Tyler nodded.
"She said you would be easier to control if you were angry."
I felt a cold kind of clarity.
The birthday dinner had not been a spontaneous cruelty.
It had been a test.
They wanted to see whether humiliation could make me give up.
I looked at Mike.
He groaned.
Then woke.
"Stephanie?"
"Your wife took Tyler."
Mike looked toward his son.
"Irene."
"Yes."
He covered his face.
"I knew she was involved."
"What?"
"I knew."
"How long?"
"Six months."
My anger exploded.
"You knew and said nothing?"
"I was trying to protect Tyler."
"By letting her use him?"
"I thought I could handle it."
"You couldn't even handle your own debt."
He looked broken.
"I was scared."
I stood.
"Everyone is scared."
I pointed at him.
"But I'm the one who keeps paying for everyone else's fear."
Tyler started crying.
"Please don't fight."
I crouched beside him.
"This isn't your fault."
"I helped them."
"You were a child."
He shook his head.
"Mom told me about Lily."
I went still.
"What did she tell you?"
"She said Lily found something."
"What?"
"A small key."
My heart pounded.
"Where?"
"She said Grandma gave it to Lily."
Mom.
I remembered the old jewelry box.
Lily had a habit of collecting tiny things.
Keys.
Buttons.
Coins.
I had kept the box after her death.
"Where is it now?"
Tyler pointed toward the hallway.
"In the room with the red carpet."
We searched.
Under the floorboard we found a tiny brass key.
It fit a lock hidden beneath the old grandfather clock.
The compartment opened.
Inside was a ledger.
Not a copy.
The original.
Pages of payments.
Names.
Dates.
Accounts.
At the center was a handwritten note from Richard.
The final recipient is not Mercer.
I turned the page.
The final beneficiary was listed.
I read the name.
My heart stopped.
IRENE HALE.
Mike stared.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Your wife."
He backed away.
"Irene isn't the mastermind."
"Then what is she?"
He shook his head.
"A pawn."
The ledger contained a second note.
Irene was recruited through debt. She does not know who signs the orders.
At the bottom was a final line.
The person giving the orders lives under my roof.
Mom.
I looked up.
But Mom was gone.
The farmhouse door slammed.
We ran outside.
A car was disappearing down the road.
Inside the farmhouse, the screen came alive again.
Caleb appeared.
"You have the ledger."
I held it up.
"What do you want?"
"Bring it to the Hawthorne House."
"Why?"
"Because the person who betrayed Richard is there."
The screen flickered.
Then Caleb smiled.
"She is standing beside you."
I turned.
May you like
Behind me stood Daniel.
And in his hand was a gun.
