Chapter 7 - My Father's Last SecretI couldn't breathe.

My father had died when I was fourteen.
A heart attack.
That was the story.
Yet the photograph proved he was alive after his supposed death date.
I stared at it for hours.
Then Detective Hart came to the house.
She examined it.
“This image has not been digitally altered.”
“Then my father didn't die when I thought he did.”
She nodded.
“Or the record is false.”
We requested the original death certificate.
It had been filed by my mother.
The doctor who signed it?
Harold's wife.
My uncle's family physician.
I felt sick.
“How far does this go?”
Detective Hart said:
“We don't know.”
My attorney recommended we reopen my father's estate.
The next morning, we found the missing trust documents.
My father had created a private trust.
The beneficiary wasn't my mother.
It wasn't me.
It wasn't Michael.
It was both sons.
Equal shares.
And the trust held one asset.
A commercial property in downtown Nashville.
The same development Victor Hale had been trying to acquire.
Suddenly the whole plan made sense.
The neighborhood wasn't the real prize.
The trust was.
The property was worth millions.
But there was another clause.
A beneficiary could only access the trust after proving that the other beneficiary had not been coerced, defrauded, or unlawfully excluded.
My mother had spent years manipulating the records.
She needed Michael on her side.
She needed me bankrupt.
Or dead.
Then both brothers would become useless obstacles.
I found the recording that night.
It was hidden inside an old clock.
My father's voice filled the room.
“Connor, if you're hearing this, then Teresa has probably already told you that I abandoned you.”
Amy sat beside me.
I pressed play.
My father's voice continued.
“She is lying.”
I closed my eyes.
“I discovered Teresa and Harold were moving money through shell companies. I confronted them.”
The recording crackled.
“They threatened Michael.”
My heart stopped.
“They told me they would send him away if I went to the police.”
My father began to cough.
“I made a mistake. I trusted my brother.”
Then his voice softened.
“If something happens to me, Teresa will claim it was natural.”
Amy grabbed my hand.
The recording continued.
“Connor, you have a brother. His name is Michael. He is not your enemy.”
I looked at Amy.
But the recording wasn't over.
“He may believe I abandoned him. He may hate you. But none of this is his fault.”
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Your mother knows about the trust.”
A pause.
“She will do anything to control it.”
The recording ended.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then the front door slammed.
Someone was inside.
I stood.
“Stay here.”
I walked downstairs.
A man was standing in the hallway.
Michael.
He looked almost exactly like my father.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
I felt something break inside me.
“You're my brother.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you help them?”
His expression tightened.
“Because I thought you were part of it.”
“Part of what?”
“Our father's disappearance.”
I stared.
“What?”
Michael took a step forward.
“Teresa told me you knew.”
“She lied.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you forge the papers?”
His eyes filled with anger.
“I was trying to get access to the trust.”
“You put my family at risk.”
“I didn't know they'd threaten your wife.”
“Who is they?”
Michael looked toward the window.
“Victor Hale.”
I stepped closer.
“Then why are you here?”
He pulled a small flash drive from his pocket.
“Because I finally found out what our mother is hiding.”
I took it.
“What?”
Michael whispered:
“She didn't just fake your signature.”
May you like
He looked me straight in the eyes.
“She had someone fake our father's death.”
