Chapter 11 - The Original PlanI watched the video three times.

Then I replayed one sentence.
Your son was never supposed to be born.
It made no sense.
Victor wanted the trust.
He wanted my property.
Why would Frederick matter?
My father knew the answer.
“The trust.”
I turned.
“What does Frederick have to do with it?”
Dad shook his head.
“The succession clause.”
My attorney pulled out the document.
He read it.
Then his face went pale.
“If both brothers die…”
I stared at him.
“Who inherits?”
He pointed to the next line.
“The surviving direct descendant.”
I felt the room go silent.
“If Michael and I die…”
“Frederick inherits the trust.”
That was the missing piece.
Victor couldn't control me forever.
He couldn't kill the trust.
But he could target the next heir.
My son.
They had planned around Frederick's birth.
My father continued.
“Teresa wanted Connor to have no children.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“She believed that if Michael and I disappeared, she could control the property.”
My stomach turned.
“So the marriage…”
“She approved it because she thought Amy was weak.”
Amy looked at my mother-in-law's abandoned chair.
“She tried to convince me to leave Connor after Frederick was born.”
I looked at her.
“You never told me.”
“I thought she was being cruel.”
My father shook his head.
“She wasn't being cruel.”
He paused.
“She was following orders.”
The room exploded with questions.
But then my phone rang.
Victor.
I answered.
“Where is my son?”
“Safe.”
“Bring him back.”
“Bring the clause.”
“I have it.”
“Then come alone.”
“No.”
Silence.
Victor laughed.
“You finally learned.”
“I learned from my mother.”
“You haven't learned enough.”
The call ended.
Then my attorney noticed something.
A watermark on the video.
It contained coordinates.
He ran the location.
A private property outside Nashville.
I knew the place.
An abandoned country estate owned by Victor Hale.
We moved immediately.
Police surrounded the property.
But the house was empty.
Again.
They had anticipated us.
Then we found a basement.
Inside were dozens of folders.
One had my name.
Another had Amy's.
Another had Frederick's.
And one was labeled:
PROJECT FAMILY.
I opened it.
The first document was a timeline.
My marriage.
My job promotion.
Our mortgage.
Frederick's birth.
Every significant event in our lives.
Predicted.
Tracked.
Managed.
I turned the page.
There was a financial projection.
It calculated how much Victor would gain if our house were sold.
Then another page.
A psychological profile of Amy.
Then mine.
Then Frederick.
Then a final page.
TARGET EVENT.
Connor's death.
Estimated date.
December 12.
Three months away.
I stared at it.
They had planned my death.
Not abstractly.
Not eventually.
They had scheduled it.
Then a noise came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Police shouted.
Someone ran.
Michael chased him.
I followed.
We reached the road.
A black SUV sped away.
Michael fired one shot into the tire.
The vehicle crashed.
Police pulled the driver out.
Mason.
He was bleeding.
He laughed.
“You're too late.”
I grabbed him.
“Where is my son?”
Mason smiled.
Then whispered:
“With Teresa.”
My phone buzzed.
A live video.
My mother holding Frederick.
She looked into the camera.
“Connor.”
I could hear sirens behind us.
She smiled.
“You found the papers.”
“Bring my son home.”
“I will.”
She kissed Frederick's forehead.
“But first…”
She held up another document.
“…you must sign away the trust.”
I stared.
“What happens if I refuse?”
Teresa's smile disappeared.
“Then you lose your son.”
The video ended.
Michael looked at me.
“We need to find her.”
I nodded.
But my father said the words that stopped me cold.
“No.”
May you like
He was staring at the document.
“That isn't Teresa's handwriting.”
