Chapter 9: The Brother Who Vanished

Tessa did not answer immediately.
The voice on the phone belonged to someone she had not heard from in years.
Her uncle.
Daniel Marlowe.
Her father’s younger brother.
The man who disappeared from their family after her father’s death.
The man whose name had suddenly appeared inside a folder filled with secrets.
A person her father had apparently been investigating.
“Tessa?”
Daniel’s voice came again.
“You’re there, aren’t you?”
She tightened her grip on the phone.
“How do you know my name?”
A brief silence followed.
Then:
“Because I know you found Eleanor.”
Tessa’s eyes moved toward the woman standing across the room.
Eleanor’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She knew that voice.
“You were watching me,” Tessa said.
“No.”
Daniel’s answer was immediate.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Tessa almost laughed.
Those words again.
Protect.
Everyone had used that word.
Bryce.
Her mother.
Eleanor.
Now him.
But somehow, every secret in her family had been hidden behind the same excuse.
“You don’t get to say that.”
Her voice became colder.
“Not after disappearing.”
Daniel sighed.
“I understand why you’re angry.”
“You have no idea.”
“Tessa—”
“No.”
She interrupted.
“I found out my brother manipulated my mother. I found out he changed her life. I found out he tried to steal what my father left behind.”
A pause.
“And now I find out you are connected too.”
Daniel said nothing.
That silence was enough.
“You are.”
“I was.”
The answer surprised her.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I made mistakes.”
Tessa looked at Eleanor.
The woman slowly shook her head.
A warning.
Be careful.
“What mistakes?”
Daniel took a breath.
“I need to meet you.”
“No.”
“Tessa.”
“You don’t get to disappear for years and suddenly ask me to meet you because you have information.”
Daniel’s voice became softer.
“You want to know what happened to your father.”
The sentence stopped her.
Because he was right.
She did.
More than anything.
“What do you know?”
“I know what happened the night before his surgery.”
Tessa froze.
Eleanor looked at her.
“What did he say?”
Daniel continued:
“I know why your father changed his will.”
Tessa’s heart raced.
“Why?”
“Because he found out who was behind everything.”
The room became silent.
“Who?”
Daniel did not answer.
Instead, he said:
“Meet me at the old train station in Fairhaven.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
Tessa looked outside.
The sun was already disappearing.
“Why there?”
“Because your father and I had our last conversation there.”
She felt a strange heaviness.
Her father.
Again.
Every road kept leading back to him.
“Why should I trust you?”
Daniel was quiet for several seconds.
Then he said:
“You shouldn’t.”
That answer surprised her.
“What?”
“You shouldn’t trust me.”
His voice became lower.
“But you should hear me.”
The call ended.
Tessa stared at the phone.
Eleanor walked closer.
“You are going.”
It was not a question.
Tessa looked at her.
“Do you think it’s a trap?”
Eleanor looked toward the window.
“I think everyone connected to your father has been carrying secrets.”
“That includes you.”
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised Tessa.
Eleanor continued.
“The difference is that your father trusted me to reveal them when the time came.”
Tessa looked at the USB drive.
“And Daniel?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“Daniel was complicated.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
Eleanor sighed.
“It is the truth.”
She sat down.
“Your father and Daniel were very close when they were young.”
Tessa listened.
“They started the company together.”
“My father and Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“Success changed things.”
Eleanor looked at the floor.
“Your father wanted stability. Daniel wanted expansion.”
“Money.”
“Yes.”
“They fought?”
“Constantly.”
Tessa thought about the photograph.
The documents.
The betrayal.
“Was Daniel involved with Bryce?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“I don’t know.”
That was the first time Eleanor admitted uncertainty.
“But your father suspected him.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel knew everything about the company.”
Tessa stood.
“Then I need to talk to him.”
Eleanor nodded.
“But do not go alone.”
“I have to.”
“No.”
Eleanor’s voice became firm.
“Your father spent years teaching you one thing.”
“What?”
“Smart people do not walk into danger just because they want answers.”
Tessa looked at her.
“And what do you suggest?”
Eleanor handed her a small device.
“What is this?”
“A recorder.”
Tessa looked surprised.
“You carry one?”
“I worked in finance for thirty years.”
A faint smile appeared.
“I learned that memories can be manipulated.”
Tessa put it in her pocket.
“I’ll be careful.”
The old Fairhaven train station had been abandoned for years.
The town had built a newer transportation system, leaving the old brick building behind.
But Daniel chose it for a reason.
Tessa knew that.
People did not choose forgotten places by accident.
They chose them because forgotten places held memories.
She arrived ten minutes early.
The station was empty.
The wind moved through broken windows.
She waited.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Then footsteps.
A man appeared from the darkness.
Older than she remembered.
His hair was gray.
His face carried years of regret.
But she recognized him.
Daniel Marlowe.
Her father’s brother.
Her uncle.
“Tessa.”
She did not smile.
“Daniel.”
He stopped several feet away.
“You look like your father.”
“I’ve heard that today.”
Daniel looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For all of this.”
Tessa crossed her arms.
“Start talking.”
Daniel nodded.
“I deserve that.”
He looked around the station.
“Your father and I came here the night before his surgery.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That Bryce was involved.”
Tessa’s expression hardened.
“And you?”
Daniel looked away.
“I knew some things.”
“Some?”
She stepped closer.
“My father suspected you.”
“I know.”
The answer surprised her.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you defend yourself?”
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“Because I was guilty.”
Tessa froze.
“Guilty of what?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I made a mistake years ago.”
“What mistake?”
“I borrowed money from the company.”
The words sounded familiar.
Like history repeating itself.
“Like Bryce?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became serious.
“Unlike Bryce, I paid it back.”
Tessa studied him.
“Then why hide it?”
“Because your father found out.”
“And?”
“He forgave me.”
Another person forgiven.
Another person given a second chance.
But why did it matter?
“Then what happened?”
Daniel looked toward the empty tracks.
“Your father realized something.”
“What?”
“That forgiveness was not enough.”
The wind blew harder.
“He realized the people around him kept making the same choices because they believed he would always save them.”
Tessa felt a painful truth in those words.
Her father’s kindness had become something people depended on.
Something they exploited.
“Did you help Bryce?”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
“But I know who did.”
Tessa held her breath.
“Who?”
Daniel reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old envelope.
The paper looked ancient.
Tessa recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her father’s.
Her heart stopped.
“Where did you get that?”
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Your father gave it to me the night before his surgery.”
Tessa stepped forward.
“That’s the letter.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
His expression became painful.
“The letter your father wrote before he died.”
Tessa stared.
“But he wrote two letters.”
“Yes.”
“One for me.”
“One for Bryce.”
The words made her freeze.
Bryce’s letter.
The missing piece.
The one nobody found.
Daniel held it out.
“I kept it because your father asked me to.”
Tessa did not take it.
“Why?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because he knew if Bryce read it…”
A pause.
“He would know your father had discovered everything.”
Tessa finally reached for the envelope.
Her hands trembled.
“Why give it to me now?”
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
“Because Bryce knows I have it.”
A cold feeling entered the air.
“What?”
“He has known for years.”
“Then why didn’t he take it?”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Because he thought he knew where I hid it.”
Tessa looked down at the envelope.
“And he was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“Where was it?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Somewhere your father knew Bryce would never search.”
Tessa opened her mouth.
But before she could ask, a sound interrupted them.
A car engine.
Fast.
Coming closer.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“We need to leave.”
Tessa looked toward the road.
A black SUV appeared.
The same kind of vehicle she had seen outside her mother’s house.
Someone had followed her.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Now.”
They ran.
The SUV stopped.
A door opened.
A figure stepped out.
Tessa looked back.
And saw a face she never expected.
Someone from her own family.
Someone who had been pretending to help.
May you like
Someone who had known about the letter all along.
Kendra.
