Chapter 10: Kendra’s Hidden Reason

The abandoned train station suddenly felt much smaller.

The old brick walls.

The broken windows.

The empty tracks stretching into the darkness.

Everything around Tessa seemed frozen.

Except one person.

Kendra Marlowe.

She stood beside the black SUV, her coat moving slightly in the cold wind.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Tessa stared at her sister-in-law.

The woman who had welcomed her into the house with a fake smile.

The woman who had watched her mother sit alone.

The woman who had stood silently while Bryce controlled every part of Judith’s life.

Tessa felt something inside her break.

Not surprise.

Not anymore.

Disappointment.

Because some part of her had hoped Kendra was only following Bryce.

She had hoped maybe she was afraid.

Maybe she was trapped.

Maybe there was still some good left.

But seeing her here changed everything.

“You followed me,” Tessa said.

Kendra slowly walked closer.

“I needed to know what you found.”

Tessa looked at Daniel.

“You knew she was coming?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Kendra looked at him.

“Still protecting her?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Not this time.”

That caught Tessa’s attention.

Not this time.

Meaning there had been another time.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

Kendra stopped several feet away.

“You have no idea what you’re getting involved in.”

Tessa almost smiled.

“That’s interesting coming from you.”

Kendra’s eyes narrowed.

“You think you understand everything because you found some papers?”

“No.”

Tessa held up the envelope.

“I understand because my mother was afraid inside her own house.”

For the first time, Kendra’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You saw her.”

“Yes.”

“And she told you everything?”

“She didn’t have to.”

Tessa stepped forward.

“I saw the fear.”

The silence that followed was uncomfortable.

Because Kendra knew exactly what she meant.

“She was always dramatic.”

The words shocked Tessa.

“My mother?”

Kendra sighed.

“Judith has always been emotional.”

Tessa stared at her.

“You isolated an elderly woman and convinced everyone she was confused.”

“I did not.”

“You lied about her health.”

“No.”

Kendra’s voice became sharper.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Kendra looked away.

For a moment, she looked tired.

Not cruel.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“You think this started with Bryce.”

Tessa said nothing.

“But it didn’t.”

Kendra looked at Daniel.

“It started long before me.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Kendra.”

“No.”

She interrupted.

“I’m done protecting everyone.”

That sentence surprised Tessa.

Protecting everyone?

Who was she protecting?

Kendra looked back at Tessa.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

She took a deep breath.

“Your father ruined my family.”

The words hit unexpectedly.

Tessa frowned.

“What?”

“My father worked for your grandfather.”

Tessa listened carefully.

“He spent thirty years building relationships with the Marlowe family.”

Kendra’s voice became colder.

“Then your father took control of the company and pushed him out.”

“That’s not true.”

Kendra laughed quietly.

“You think you know your father.”

Tessa felt anger rising.

“I do.”

“No.”

Kendra shook her head.

“You knew the father who read you bedtime stories. The father who brought you ice cream after school.”

Her expression hardened.

“I knew the businessman.”

Tessa looked at Daniel.

He did not interrupt.

That worried her.

“What happened?”

Kendra continued.

“My father lost everything.”

“Because of my father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father believed he was protecting the company.”

Kendra’s voice became bitter.

“He made decisions that destroyed people.”

Tessa felt confused.

“My father wasn’t perfect.”

The words surprised Kendra.

Tessa continued.

“But that does not excuse what you did.”

Kendra looked at her.

“You sound just like him.”

“Maybe.”

Tessa held the envelope tighter.

“But unlike you, I’m trying to find the truth.”

Kendra looked at the envelope.

Her expression changed.

“You found Bryce’s letter.”

Tessa froze.

“How do you know?”

Kendra said nothing.

That was the answer.

“You knew about it.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“She knew.”

Tessa looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Kendra knew your father wrote a letter to Bryce.”

“How?”

“Because she was there.”

Tessa turned back.

Kendra looked angry now.

Not guilty.

Angry.

“Bryce told me everything.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

She looked at the envelope.

“He told me your father was going to destroy him.”

Tessa shook her head.

“No.”

“He said your father planned to take away his future.”

“He was protecting the family.”

Kendra’s expression changed.

“Was he?”

The question lingered.

Because Tessa knew something uncomfortable.

Her father was not perfect.

He made mistakes.

He hurt people.

But the difference was what happened after.

Some people admitted their mistakes.

Others built entire lives around hiding them.

“You married Bryce because of revenge?”

Kendra did not answer.

That was enough.

Tessa felt sick.

“You didn’t love him.”

A pause.

Then Kendra whispered:

“At first, no.”

Daniel looked away.

Tessa stared.

“At first?”

Kendra’s face changed.

“I thought I was using him.”

“And then?”

“He became exactly what I expected.”

The answer was colder than anger.

It was disappointment.

“I saw what he did to people.”

She looked toward the road.

“I saw how easily he lied.”

“Then why stay?”

Kendra’s eyes became distant.

“Because by then, I was trapped too.”

Tessa did not know whether to believe her.

“How?”

Kendra looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Kendra.”

“Tell her.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he finally spoke.

“Bryce knew about Kendra’s father.”

Tessa frowned.

“What about him?”

Daniel looked at her.

“He was not just removed from the company.”

A pause.

“He was investigated.”

Tessa felt the pieces moving.

“Investigated for what?”

Kendra answered.

“Fraud.”

Silence.

“My father was accused of stealing money.”

Tessa looked at Daniel.

“Was he guilty?”

Nobody answered.

That silence was louder than words.

Kendra’s eyes filled with anger.

“My father spent years trying to prove he was innocent.”

“And?”

“He failed.”

Tessa looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because your father had the documents.”

A cold feeling moved through her.

“The same kind of documents Bryce used?”

Kendra looked away.

“Yes.”

Tessa understood.

The cycle.

The same pattern.

Someone loses everything.

Someone hides evidence.

Someone seeks revenge.

But revenge had created another monster.

“You helped Bryce because you wanted to destroy my family.”

Kendra’s voice became quiet.

“At first.”

“And now?”

Kendra looked at the ground.

“Now I realize I helped create someone worse than the person I hated.”

The confession hung in the air.

Then Daniel spoke.

“She knows where the original evidence is.”

Tessa looked at him.

“What evidence?”

“The documents your father used against Kendra’s father.”

Tessa turned toward Kendra.

“Where?”

Kendra hesitated.

Then reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small key.

“My father kept one thing before he died.”

She handed it to Tessa.

“A safety deposit box.”

Tessa stared at the key.

“What is inside?”

Kendra looked directly at her.

“The truth about your father.”

A sudden sound interrupted them.

Footsteps.

Someone else was approaching.

Daniel turned.

His face changed.

“No.”

Tessa followed his gaze.

Another figure stepped out of the darkness.

Bryce.

But he was not alone.

Two men stood behind him.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

“Tessa.”

His voice carried across the empty station.

“You really should have listened.”

Tessa held the key tightly.

Bryce looked at Kendra.

Then at Daniel.

His smile disappeared.

“You have no idea what you just started.”

Tessa stared at her brother.

For the first time, she did not see the older brother who protected her as a child.

She saw the person her father had warned her about.

Someone who believed he could control everyone.

Everyone except the one person who refused to stay silent.

Bryce stepped closer.

“Give me the envelope.”

Tessa tightened her grip.

“No.”

A strange calm appeared on Bryce’s face.

“Then I guess you finally get to see why Dad was afraid of me.”

The wind moved through the empty station.

And Tessa realized something.

The letter in her hand was not just evidence.

May you like

It was the reason people were willing to destroy each other.

And Bryce was willing to do anything to get it back.
