Chapter 14 - The Last ShareholderThree days later, ValeCore's board met.

Every major investor attended.

The room was silent when I entered.

No one knew what would happen.

The world had spent seventy-two hours watching the Vale family collapse in public.

My father had resigned from every company position.

My mother had disappeared from social media.

Bianca had canceled everything.

Victor remained in custody.

Marcus was being investigated internationally.

And ValeCore's valuation had crossed fifteen billion dollars.

Again.

I stood at the head of the table.

"Let's begin."

My general counsel entered.

Then stopped.

A woman followed her.

She was in her early forties.

Dark coat.

Gray eyes.

No jewelry.

No expression.

I didn't recognize her.

"Who are you?"

She placed a folder on the table.

"My name is Nora Hale."

"What do you want?"

"I own fifty-one percent of the trust controlling ValeCore."

The room erupted.

I didn't move.

"That's impossible."

She pushed the documents toward me.

"They're authentic."

My counsel examined them.

Then looked at me.

"It's valid."

I picked up the papers.

The signature belonged to Professor Elias Ward.

I stared.

"No."

Nora spoke quietly.

"Your professor transferred control years ago."

"Why?"

"Because he knew this day would come."

"Who are you?"

She hesitated.

Then answered:

"Your aunt."

I froze.

"What?"

"My mother was Eleanor Vale."

Marcus's older sister.

The one nobody mentioned.

The one who had died when I was a baby.

Or so I had believed.

Nora smiled faintly.

"I wasn't dead."

I stared at her.

My entire family history seemed to be built from locked doors.

"You created the Northbridge trust."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I destroyed it."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Northbridge began as Marcus's network."

"Then?"

"I infiltrated it."

"Why?"

"Because your father was right about one thing."

She looked at me.

"Someone had to protect you."

My throat tightened.

"My mother?"

"She tried."

"My father?"

"He failed."

"Marcus?"

"He wanted to use you."

"Then why didn't you contact me?"

"Because I needed you to become impossible to control."

I looked at the document.

"Fifty-one percent."

She nodded.

"Your company."

"Mine?"

"No."

She smiled.

"Yours."

She pushed a second document toward me.

"This transfers the trust to you."

I stared.

"Why would you do that?"

"Because Professor Ward believed you were ready."

I looked at the final page.

A sentence was highlighted.

Control shall pass to Ava Vale upon the public revelation of ValeCore's true founder.

My chest tightened.

"This was planned."

"Yes."

"By whom?"

Nora smiled.

"By the only people who believed you could survive your family."

I thought of Professor Ward.

Mara.

Even my mother.

All the hidden decisions.

All the secrets.

All the pain.

And suddenly the empty seats at my graduation meant something different.

They hadn't simply been absent.

They had been watching.

Testing.

Waiting.

For me to become strong enough to stand alone.

Nora stood.

"I'm leaving."

"Wait."

She turned.

"Why did you choose me?"

She looked at me for a long moment.

"Because your mother once asked me to save you."

Then she walked away.

I looked down at the transfer agreement.

Underneath it was a final note.

Handwritten.

Professor Ward's handwriting.

Ava, there is one truth I never told you.

I stared.

The final sentence continued:

You were never the first person to build ValeCore.

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because beneath the sentence was a name.

A name from before I was born.
