Chapter 14 - The Name Beneath the NameThe hidden beneficiary wasn't my mother.

It wasn't Solange.
It wasn't my father.
It was someone none of us knew.
A child.
A boy.
Born twenty-three years earlier.
His name was Gabriel.
Mother went silent when Adrian read the name.
I stared at her.
“Who is Gabriel?”
She didn't answer.
Solange whispered, “Mom?”
Mother's hands shook.
Adrian read the trust document.
“Cordelia established a protected trust for Gabriel under the condition that his identity remain sealed until her death.”
“Why?”
I looked at Mother.
She finally spoke.
“Because he was my son.”
The room went dead silent.
Solange stood.
“You had another child?”
Mother nodded.
“A son?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
Mother closed her eyes.
“I gave him away.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“Because Marcel knew about him.”
Mother explained.
Gabriel had been born years after Solange and before my career began.
Mother believed Marcel would use him as leverage.
So she placed him with another family.
Grandma found out.
She secretly supported Gabriel's education.
The trust was meant to protect him.
I asked the question that haunted me.
“Why didn't you tell us?”
Mother looked at me.
“Because I was ashamed.”
For the first time, her expression contained no anger.
Only exhaustion.
“I made choices I thought I could undo.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
She looked at Solange.
“I kept choosing the easier lie.”
Solange wiped her tears.
“And then you made us all live inside it.”
Mother nodded.
“Yes.”
I didn't forgive her.
Not then.
Maybe not ever.
But I finally understood something.
Understanding wasn't the same as absolution.
Adrian handed me another document.
“Your grandmother gave you one final choice.”
“What choice?”
“The estate can be divided according to her original plan.”
“And what was that?”
“You receive control of Apex.”
“My father receives a lifetime trust.”
“Gabriel receives a protected trust.”
“And Mother?”
“Nothing.”
I looked at the document.
Then at Solange.
She had lost everything she thought she needed.
Designer houses.
Family approval.
A carefully manufactured identity.
But she was still my sister.
“Can I change it?”
Adrian nodded.
“Your grandmother anticipated that.”
There was another clause.
If Vivienne chooses compassion over revenge, she may redirect a portion of the estate.
I stared at the words.
Grandma had known me.
She knew I'd be tempted to become as cold as they had been.
She left me a way out.
Not forgiveness.
Choice.
I signed one amendment.
A small trust for Solange.
Enough for a house.
Enough for a life.
Nothing more.
Mother received nothing.
Marcel's holdings were placed under legal review.
Gabriel was located.
And when I finally met him, he looked nothing like what I expected.
He was quiet.
Kind.
Nervous.
He hugged me without hesitation.
“I've known about you for years,” he said.
“How?”
“Grandma sent me photographs.”
I laughed through tears.
“She kept photographs of everyone.”
He smiled.
“She said you were the brave one.”
That night, I returned to Grandma's house alone.
The library was nearly empty.
Boxes had been removed.
Shelves cleaned.
The safe was gone.
But one frame remained on the wall.
A photograph of Grandma.
Beside it was another.
My father holding me.
I touched the glass.
Then I noticed something behind the frame.
A final envelope.
My hands began to shake.
The envelope contained one sentence.
You still haven't discovered the reason your mother was so desperate to control Apex.
I turned the paper over.
On the back was a date.
Tomorrow.
May you like
And an address.
The warehouse where I had supposedly worked all those years ago.
