Chapter 13 - The Boardroom TrapBy morning, Apex's board had been called into an emergency meeting.

Marcel arrived with six lawyers.

Mother arrived beside him.

Solange came last.

She looked exhausted.

The boardroom doors closed.

Marcel placed a folder on the table.

“Vivienne has created a false narrative around a family dispute.”

I looked at him.

“You broke into my office.”

“I have no idea what you're referring to.”

Adrian slid the security footage across the table.

Marcel watched it.

Then smiled.

“Digitally fabricated.”

Emery leaned forward.

“We anticipated that answer.”

He connected a second drive.

Original camera logs.

Encrypted signatures.

Timestamp verification.

Marcel's smile disappeared.

Mother stood.

“This is harassment.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

I placed the forensic accounting report on the table.

“This is theft.”

Then I placed the patent documents.

“This is fraud.”

Then my father's medical records.

“This is kidnapping.”

Mother sat down.

The room went silent.

Marcel looked at her.

She looked back.

For the first time, I saw something between them.

Not loyalty.

Fear.

He had expected her to protect him.

She suddenly understood that he wouldn't protect her.

Adrian opened another document.

“The state attorney's office has copies.”

Marcel stood.

“You have no authority.”

I said quietly, “You do.”

He stared.

“Because you're the man who spent thirty years building a legal empire around stolen work.”

I paused.

“And you're about to lose it.”

He laughed.

“You think your grandmother's little archive can destroy me?”

“No.”

I pushed a button.

The screen behind me turned on.

A video appeared.

Mother and Marcel.

Recorded twelve years earlier.

Their voices were clear.

Mother was saying:

“She'll never know.”

Marcel answered:

“By the time she does, the company will belong to us.”

The boardroom became silent.

Mother covered her mouth.

Solange stared at the screen.

I had never seen her look at our mother that way.

Then another recording played.

My father's voice.

“I told her not to sign.”

Mother responded:

“You're going to cooperate.”

My father's voice:

“I'm not destroying my daughter.”

Mother:

“Then you lose everything.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Marcel slowly sat down.

But I noticed something.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at Solange.

She understood too.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Mother didn't answer.

Solange stood.

“You told me Dad abandoned us.”

Mother closed her eyes.

“You told me Vivienne was selfish.”

Silence.

“You told me Grandma hated me.”

Mother's shoulders began shaking.

“You lied about everything.”

Mother whispered, “I was trying to protect you.”

Solange laughed through tears.

“No.”

She looked at her.

“You were trying to protect yourself.”

The board voted that afternoon.

Marcel was removed from every position connected to the acquisition.

The forged transfer was frozen.

My company remained mine.

But the most important decision hadn't happened yet.

There was still Grandma's trust.

And Adrian had just received a letter.

He opened it.

Then looked at me.

“This is from your grandmother.”

“What now?”

He handed it over.

The final sentence read:

The person who betrayed you most deeply is not the person you think.

I looked at Solange.

She was crying.

May you like

Then Adrian added:

“There is one beneficiary your grandmother never told anyone about.”
