Chapter 13 - Locked in the BoardroomPanic exploded.

Directors shouted.

Someone banged against the doors.

The fire alarm didn't activate.

That meant the system had been disabled deliberately.

Brett stood calmly in the center of the room.

Victor moved toward the exit.

“What's happening?” one director screamed.

Brett said nothing.

Then the smoke cleared slightly.

I saw the sprinklers.

They weren't working.

Micah grabbed my arm.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

He pointed toward the ceiling.

“Camera.”

A tiny red light blinked above us.

Someone was recording.

Margaret looked up.

“Brett?”

He smiled.

“You wanted evidence.”

He tapped his phone.

“Now you'll have it.”

A speaker crackled.

A man's voice came through.

“Claire Holloway, you're under investigation for corporate fraud.”

The room went silent.

A prerecorded statement.

He had prepared everything.

Then another voice.

A police chief.

Then another.

All manipulated.

Brett was manufacturing a false arrest in real time.

But he had made one mistake.

Micah noticed the camera.

He pulled out his phone.

“I can get into it.”

I stared.

“How?”

“It’s connected to the company network.”

“Micah.”

“I need thirty seconds.”

He began typing.

Victor saw him.

“Take the boy.”

Two security guards moved.

I stepped in front of Micah.

“No.”

The first guard grabbed my shoulder.

Sierra attacked him.

The second grabbed her.

The room erupted into chaos.

Then every screen flickered.

Micah had taken control.

The boardroom camera feed appeared.

But not the one Brett expected.

We saw a different location.

A private office.

Brett's office.

Victor's voice echoed through the speakers.

“After she signs, transfer the remaining funds.”

Brett nodded.

Then the screen showed a second clip.

Victor and Brett discussing the fire.

Then a third.

Richard.

Then a fourth.

The board members stared.

One director whispered:

“Where did this come from?”

Micah smiled faintly.

“Dad's archive.”

Brett turned white.

“You little…”

I stepped toward him.

“You built your entire life on secrets.”

He looked at me.

“And you think a twelve-year-old can destroy me?”

Micah answered.

“Yes.”

Brett lunged.

Security stopped him.

At the same instant, police stormed the room.

The locks were cut.

Everyone shouted.

Victor tried to escape.

He was arrested.

Brett was handcuffed.

For a moment, I thought it was over.

Then Brett looked directly at me.

“You still don't know.”

I said nothing.

He smiled.

“The person who started this wasn't Victor.”

My stomach tightened.

He leaned closer.

“It was your grandfather.”

My blood went cold.

“You told me he abandoned us.”

Brett laughed.

“Your grandmother lied.”

He was taken away.

I turned toward my mother.

She was crying.

“Is it true?”

She couldn't answer.

Daniel looked at the floor.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Finally, my mother whispered:

“Yes.”

My grandfather had not been a victim.

He had been one of the original architects.

The company had begun as his network.

My grandmother had spent decades trying to dismantle it from inside.

The wheat brooch wasn't merely a family heirloom.

It was the symbol of ownership over a hidden empire.

And now that empire was exposed.

But there was one question left.

Who had inherited the rest?

My mother reached into her coat.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“The answer is inside.”

I opened it.

A single name appeared.

Not mine.

Not Micah's.

May you like

Not Brett's.

SIERRA VAUGHN.
