Chapter 11 - The Man Who Built BrettRichard admitted everything.

Not willingly.
Under pressure.
Daniel had activated a concealed recording system before handing over the server.
Every word Richard spoke was captured.
Victor had financed Brett from the beginning.
Richard had provided the board connections.
Sierra had been assigned to manipulate Brett.
The company had been designed to be stripped piece by piece.
Brett had only become too ambitious.
“He wanted Claire for himself.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“That was his mistake.”
I stared at him.
“You knew he loved me.”
“No.”
“You used me.”
“You were useful.”
The word hurt.
Not because it was new.
Because I had finally stopped believing I needed to be loved by someone who saw me as an asset.
Richard demanded the server.
Daniel refused.
Richard raised the gun.
Then Micah stepped forward.
He held up his phone.
“Don't.”
Richard looked at him.
“You're twelve.”
“I know.”
“You have no idea what's happening.”
“I recorded everything.”
Richard froze.
Micah pressed a button.
Richard's own voice played back.
Brett was never supposed to be in charge.
Then:
Victor was.
Richard's face drained.
Police sirens approached outside.
Margaret had called them.
Richard dropped the gun.
The door burst open.
Officers entered.
For the first time in ten years, someone else was taking care of the disaster.
I watched Richard being handcuffed.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
YOU THINK YOU WON?
Another.
THE BOARD VOTE IS IN ONE HOUR.
Another.
YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THE REAL OWNER IS.
I stared.
Daniel's expression changed.
“Show me.”
I handed him the phone.
He frowned.
“That number is registered to Holloway House.”
“But who?”
He checked.
The answer made no sense.
Claire Holloway.
My own corporate identity.
Someone was using my credentials.
Again.
Then we received an email.
Subject:
SUCCESSION ACTIVATION NOTICE
I opened it.
The trust had activated.
But there was a problem.
The beneficiary was no longer Micah.
The name had been changed.
BRETT HOLLOWAY.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“How?”
Margaret took the document.
“This amendment was filed.”
“By whom?”
She checked.
“Your grandmother.”
“No.”
“It bears her signature.”
“She's dead.”
The amendment was dated three months after her death.
Daniel stared at it.
“Forgery.”
“But professionally done.”
I looked at Micah.
Brett had known.
He had known about the trust.
He had anticipated this.
He had spent years preparing for the possibility that the original succession structure would surface.
The board meeting suddenly felt very different.
I wasn't walking into it as the rightful owner.
I was walking into it with a forged document threatening to make Brett the beneficiary.
Margaret looked at me.
“We can challenge it.”
“How long?”
“Months.”
“We don't have months.”
Daniel shook his head.
“There may be another copy.”
“Where?”
He looked at the gold wheat brooch.
“The second compartment.”
I stared at the brooch.
The first compartment had contained the microSD card.
The second was still sealed.
I opened it.
Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.
One sentence.
The truth is not in the signature. Look at the witness.
Beneath it was a name.
Sierra Vaughn.
I looked up.
Sierra was standing in the doorway.
She had been silent the entire time.
“I know why my name is there.”
I stared.
“Why?”
She lowered her eyes.
“Because I was there when your grandmother signed the real document.”
Margaret stepped toward her.
“When?”
“Six months before she died.”
“Then why does the forged amendment have her signature?”
Sierra swallowed.
“Because I know who forged it.”
“Who?”
She looked directly at me.
“Brett.”
I exhaled.
“Then prove it.”
Sierra shook her head.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because the person who helped him forge it is still alive.”
“Who?”
May you like
Sierra whispered:
“Your mother.”
