Chapter 5 - THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS NEVER LOVEI couldn't hear anything after that.

Not Ethan shouting.

Not Jonathan calling my name.

Not even the cars leaving.

One sentence kept repeating inside my head.

Your marriage to Ryan wasn't an accident.

It was an assignment.

I thought about our wedding.

Ryan crying when I walked down the aisle.

His hands shaking.

His promises.

The honeymoon.

The apartment.

The late-night conversations.

Every memory suddenly looked different.

“What does she mean?” I asked Jonathan.

He didn't answer.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“She means Ryan was instructed to marry you.”

My stomach dropped.

“By Diane?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To locate the trust.”

I laughed.

It sounded broken.

“So my husband never loved me?”

Jonathan looked away.

“I don't know.”

That hurt more than a lie.

Ethan stepped beside me.

“We're going somewhere safe.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“There is nowhere safe.”

He pulled a folder from the car.

“This is why.”

Inside were photographs.

Ryan meeting Diane.

Ryan entering private offices.

Ryan speaking to lawyers.

Then photographs of me.

Leaving work.

Entering my apartment.

Visiting my mother.

Sleeping.

I nearly dropped the folder.

“How long?”

Jonathan said nothing.

“How long has he been watching me?”

“Since before your wedding.”

I felt sick.

I remembered Ryan asking why my mother kept certain boxes locked.

Why she never spoke about my grandfather.

Why I had no childhood photographs with my father.

Why I never saw old legal documents.

He hadn't been curious.

He had been searching.

“For what?” I asked.

Jonathan pointed to a photograph of my mother's bedroom.

A close-up of a small painting.

I recognized it.

It had hung above her bed my entire childhood.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Look at the frame.”

I did.

There was a tiny carved symbol.

A circle.

Then three lines.

Jonathan said:

“That's the seal of the Vale Trust.”

I stared.

“The trust is inside the painting?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

Mother began crying.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.”

She whispered, “Yes.”

“Where is it?”

She pointed at me.

“Inside something your grandfather gave you when you were a child.”

I searched my memories.

A necklace.

A music box.

A silver locket.

My mother's eyes stopped at my neck.

I reached underneath my shirt.

The necklace.

The tiny silver pendant I had worn since childhood.

Jonathan whispered:

“That's it.”

I tore it off.

It looked ordinary.

A tiny oval.

But when Jonathan pressed the side, the pendant opened.

Inside was a microchip.

I stared.

Ethan swore.

Jonathan looked toward the road.

“They know.”

“Who?”

“Everyone who wants the inheritance.”

A phone vibrated.

Mine.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Ryan.

“Claire.”

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Where are you?”

I didn't answer.

“You don't understand what you've uncovered.”

“Did you marry me for the trust?”

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

“Ryan?”

“Yes.”

One word.

My eyes filled with tears.

“Did you ever love me?”

Another pause.

Then:

“At first, no.”

My heart broke.

“And later?”

He breathed into the phone.

“That's why you have to come home.”

“Why?”

“Because Diane isn't the person you should be afraid of.”

I froze.

“Then who?”

Ryan whispered:

“Your mother.”

The call ended.

I looked at Mother.

She was holding something behind her back.

“What are you hiding?”

She didn't answer.

Ethan noticed.

“Mom.”

She slowly brought out a photograph.

It showed three people.

Jonathan.

Eleanor.

And my mother.

On the back, a date was written.

Twenty-eight years ago.

And beneath it, one sentence:

THE NIGHT CLAIRE WAS BORN.

Mother looked at me.

“I lied about the day you were born.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because Claire…”

She took a breath.

“You weren't born twenty-seven years ago.”

She looked at Jonathan.

“You were born twenty-eight years ago.”

My entire world tilted.

May you like

And then Jonathan said the words that made my blood freeze.

“You weren't their only child.”
