Chapter 13 - FIRE DOESN'T BURY EVERYTHINGSmoke filled the basement.

Flames spread across the ceiling.

Everyone shouted.

Hale broke the door.

“Move!”

Robert disappeared through a hidden passage.

I grabbed Eleanor.

Mother grabbed Lily.

Ethan carried Ryan.

We escaped through the garden.

The estate burned behind us.

Police surrounded the property.

Robert was gone.

Diane was gone.

But something had changed.

The evidence survived.

The recorder.

The documents.

The trust files.

Everything had been copied.

Hale looked at me.

“This is enough to destroy Diane.”

“What about Robert?”

“We'll find him.”

I looked at Ryan.

He was alive.

Barely.

At the hospital, he woke three days later.

The first thing he said was:

“I'm sorry.”

I sat beside him.

“You don't owe me an apology for everything.”

“I do.”

“You didn't know we were related.”

“No.”

“You lied about the marriage.”

“Yes.”

I looked away.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“I still do.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“But I can't be your wife.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

We both understood.

Whatever we had been was gone.

Not because the love was fake.

Because the truth had made it impossible.

Months later, Vale Meridian collapsed.

Diane's accounts were frozen.

Robert became an international fugitive.

Eleanor testified.

Mother testified.

Jonathan testified.

Lily testified.

And I did too.

The family name became a scandal.

But the trust remained.

The lawyers told me I could control the company.

I refused.

Instead, Lily and I dissolved the central trust and created a foundation.

The inheritance became something useful.

Not power.

Not revenge.

Freedom.

But one question remained.

Who sent the hospital photograph?

We never found out.

Until six months later.

I received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was one photograph.

Robert.

Alive.

Standing in another country.

On the back was a message.

“YOU WON.”

Then:

“NOW LOOK BEHIND YOU.”

I turned.

A black car was parked outside my house.

The passenger window lowered.

A woman stepped out.

I knew her face.

She was the young woman from an old photograph.

The girl beside my grandfather.

The woman everyone said had died before I was born.

Eleanor's sister.

I ran outside.

“Who are you?”

She looked at me.

“My name is Victoria.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you want?”

She smiled.

“To return something your grandfather stole.”

“What?”

She opened her hand.

Inside was another silver key.

A larger one.

And engraved across it were four words:

PROJECT BLACK TABLE.

I stared.

“What is that?”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“The reason your mother was afraid.”

She looked behind me.

“You thought Diane was the villain.”

May you like

“What?”

“She was only following orders.”
