Chapter 7 - Daniel looked different without his expensive suit.No tie.

No polished smile.

His shirt sleeves were rolled up.

There was blood on one cuff.

Patricia stood beside him with the gun pointed directly at my chest.

Marcus moved slowly.

“Put the weapon down.”

Patricia laughed.

“You still think you're in control.”

Marcus stared at her.

“Actually, I know I am.”

She pulled back the hammer.

“You lawyers are always so confident before someone gets shot.”

“Mom?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Don't.”

I stared at him.

“You called her Mom.”

He smiled faintly.

“Habit.”

Patricia stepped closer.

“You've ruined everything.”

“No,” I said.

“You did.”

She shook her head.

“You were never supposed to activate the trust.”

“I didn't know I could.”

“Exactly.”

Her anger made no sense.

I looked at Daniel.

“What was Phase Two?”

Neither answered.

I took another step.

“You married me for access to the trust.”

Daniel said nothing.

“You lied about the house.”

Nothing.

“You lied about Victoria.”

Still nothing.

“You lied about my father.”

Patricia's eyes flickered.

“And my mother.”

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your mother is not part of this.”

“Then where is she?”

He looked away.

Patricia stepped between us.

“She is exactly where she needs to be.”

My hands curled into fists.

“What did you do to her?”

Patricia smiled.

“Nothing.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“From whom?”

Patricia looked at Daniel.

“From all of us.”

That answer confused me.

Marcus noticed it too.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“You really don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

He looked at me.

“For five years, I thought the trust was the entire objective.”

“And now?”

“Now I know it was just the lock.”

“Lock to what?”

“The vault.”

Marcus stiffened.

“What vault?”

Daniel laughed.

“You heard him.”

He pointed at me.

“She doesn't know.”

Patricia lowered the gun slightly.

“Her father never told her.”

“Tell me.”

Patricia shook her head.

“You need to see it.”

She stepped toward a steel door at the end of the warehouse.

A biometric scanner was mounted beside it.

I stared.

The screen displayed one instruction.

AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY REQUIRED.

Patricia looked at me.

“Your thumb.”

I didn't move.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily.”

“No.”

“You want answers.”

“I want to know where my mother is.”

“Then open the vault.”

Marcus whispered:

“Don't.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because we don't know what it contains.”

Daniel smiled.

“You've spent five years wanting to know what your husband was hiding.”

He stepped aside.

“Now you'll see.”

I walked to the scanner.

My heart hammered.

I pressed my thumb against the glass.

Nothing.

Then the scanner flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED.

Patricia frowned.

“Again.”

I pressed harder.

Red.

Daniel's smile faded.

“What changed?”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Someone altered the authorization.”

Patricia turned toward him.

“You said the trust was activated.”

“It was.”

“Then why won't it open?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Because your father placed a second condition.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What condition?”

Marcus pointed to the screen.

“Beneficiary plus bloodline verification.”

Patricia's face went blank.

“What?”

Marcus looked at me.

“There may be another living beneficiary.”

Daniel took a step back.

I turned.

“What did you know?”

He swallowed.

“Nothing.”

“Liar.”

“I swear.”

Patricia suddenly lowered the gun.

Her face had changed.

She looked terrified.

“That's impossible.”

“What is?”

She whispered:

“Your father had another child.”

The room went silent.

Marcus stared at her.

Daniel stared at me.

I felt as though the floor had vanished.

“Another child?”

Patricia nodded.

“A son.”

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

I screamed.

“Who?”

Patricia looked at Daniel.

Then away.

“His name was Evan.”

I had never heard the name.

“Where is he?”

“He died.”

“When?”

Patricia hesitated.

“Before you were born.”

“That's convenient.”

“It is the truth.”

Marcus looked at the vault.

“If Evan was a beneficiary, the access system may require both.”

Daniel suddenly moved.

He grabbed Patricia's arm.

“You said there was no surviving child.”

“There wasn't.”

“Then why is the system rejecting her?”

“I don't know.”

The vault suddenly made a sound.

A low mechanical hum.

Everyone froze.

The screen turned green.

SECOND AUTHORIZATION DETECTED.

Marcus stared at the display.

“That's impossible.”

I stepped back.

“What second authorization?”

The steel door opened one inch.

Then stopped.

On the screen appeared a name.

EVAN HARPER.

Patricia began shaking.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Emily.”

“What?”

“Your father was right.”

“About what?”

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Someone else is alive.”

Then footsteps sounded behind us.

Slow.

Measured.

A man emerged from the darkness.

He was holding a photograph.

He looked at me.

And smiled.

“Hello, Emily.”

I stared at his face.

He looked almost exactly like my father.

Except for one thing.

A scar across his left eyebrow.

He held out the photograph.

It showed my mother.

And a newborn baby.

May you like

On the back were four words.

YOUR BROTHER IS ALIVE.
