Chapter 12 - My mother led me into a separate chamber hidden behind the archive. The walls were concrete.

No windows.

No cameras.

At least none that I could see.

She sat across from me.

For the first time in twenty years, I was sitting with the woman I thought I'd lost forever.

“You had another network?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To protect you.”

I almost smiled.

“Everyone uses that phrase.”

“I know.”

“Then explain it differently.”

She nodded.

“Your father believed information was power.”

“He was right.”

“He was wrong.”

She looked at me.

“Information is only power when someone controls the consequences.”

I didn't understand.

She continued.

“My father created the original Harper network.”

“Grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“He admitted that.”

“But he never told you why.”

“Why?”

“He believed money alone couldn't protect a family.”

“So he collected secrets.”

“He collected leverage.”

My mother showed me a photograph.

A room full of men.

Business leaders.

Lawyers.

Government officials.

Then she pointed to one.

“Roland Mercer.”

Another.

“Daniel's father.”

Another.

“Evelyn.”

Then my mother pointed toward the center.

“Martin.”

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“What did they do?”

“They built the network.”

“What happened?”

“They began selling access.”

I stared.

“To whom?”

“Anyone willing to pay.”

“That became the fraud.”

“Yes.”

“And my father tried to stop them.”

“Yes.”

“What about you?”

“I helped him.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

My mother looked at me for a long moment.

“Because I made a terrible mistake.”

“What?”

“I trusted Patricia.”

Patricia.

I felt anger rising again.

“What did she do?”

“She told Evelyn where we were hiding.”

“And?”

“Your father was attacked.”

“That was the warehouse shooting?”

“Yes.”

“Who died?”

“My sister.”

I froze.

“You had a sister?”

“Evelyn.”

My mother lowered her eyes.

“She was my twin.”

I stared.

“Evelyn was your twin?”

“Yes.”

Everything suddenly became more complicated.

Two sisters.

Two networks.

One family.

And decades of betrayal.

My mother continued.

“Evelyn believed our father chose me.”

“For what?”

“To inherit the system.”

“And he did?”

“No.”

“He gave it to my father.”

She nodded.

“That was enough to destroy the family.”

I looked at her.

“What happened after the shooting?”

“Evelyn disappeared.”

“Then she came back.”

“Yes.”

“With Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Why did Daniel obey her?”

“Because she had someone he loved.”

“Who?”

My mother looked toward the doorway.

Victoria stepped inside.

“My daughter.”

I froze.

“What?”

Victoria's expression broke.

“Daniel and I had a child.”

The room went silent.

I looked at her.

“She died.”

“No.”

My heart started pounding.

“Where is she?”

Victoria's eyes filled.

“She was hidden.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn wanted to use her.”

“For what?”

Victoria whispered:

“To control Daniel.”

I thought of Daniel's strange behavior over the years.

The nights he disappeared.

The calls he never explained.

The money he sent overseas.

I finally understood.

He had been paying someone.

Not another woman.

Not an affair.

A ransom.

“Where is she now?”

Victoria said:

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Closer than you think.”

I stared.

My mother looked toward the wall.

A hidden door opened.

A young woman stepped inside.

She was about twenty.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

She looked at me.

Then at Victoria.

“Mom?”

Victoria rushed forward.

They embraced.

I watched in silence.

Then the girl looked at me.

“Are you Emily?”

“Yes.”

She smiled nervously.

“I'm Leah.”

Something about her face was familiar.

I looked at my mother.

She nodded.

“Leah has been living under another name.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn believed she could use Leah against Victoria.”

I looked at Victoria.

“So Daniel protected her.”

“Yes.”

I felt something shift inside me.

It didn't absolve Daniel.

Nothing could.

But suddenly he looked less like the monster I had built in my head.

And more like a man who had made monstrous choices while trapped inside something larger.

Then Marcus entered.

He was holding a phone.

“Emily.”

“What?”

He looked grim.

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

“Your husband is gone.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Daniel isn't the only one missing.”

“Who else?”

“Eli.”

“And?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Evelyn.”

I looked at my mother.

She went pale.

Marcus continued.

“They took the archive drive.”

My grandfather's voice came from the hallway.

“No.”

He ran into the room.

“The final account.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He stared at me.

“The number you saw wasn't the inheritance.”

“Then what was it?”

“Debt.”

I froze.

“Debt to whom?”

He looked at my mother.

Then at me.

“To the person who has been funding this entire operation.”

I swallowed.

“Who?”

My grandfather whispered:

“Daniel's father.”

I stared.

“He's dead.”

“No.”

May you like

My mother closed her eyes.

“He never died.”
