Chapter 15 - THE LAST SECRETThree months later, the world still talked about the collapse of the Black Ledger.

More than two hundred executives had been arrested.

Several governments launched investigations.

Billions of dollars in hidden assets were recovered.

Vance Global survived.

Barely.

As for me, I took control.

Not because I wanted power.

Because I finally understood why my father had left it to me.

The first thing I did was dissolve the private network.

The second was create a foundation.

The third was finally give myself back the career I had abandoned twelve years earlier.

I hired financial experts.

Lawyers.

Auditors.

People who didn't work for my family.

People who would tell me when I was wrong.

Clara went back to school.

She slept with a night-light for two weeks.

Then one night, she asked:

"Is Daddy coming home?"

I didn't know how to answer.

Flynn survived.

The bullet had missed his heart by less than an inch.

He spent six weeks in the hospital.

We were not together.

Maybe we never would be.

But I visited him.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Because Clara loved her father.

One rainy afternoon, I stood beside his hospital bed.

He looked thinner.

Older.

Human.

"I read the reports," I said.

He smiled faintly.

"Which ones?"

"All of them."

"Then you know."

"I know you lied to me."

"I know."

"You manipulated my entire life."

"I know."

"You slept with Selina."

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

I looked away.

"I'll never forget that."

"You shouldn't."

I turned back.

"Do you regret it?"

"Every day."

We were silent.

Then Flynn reached beneath his pillow.

He handed me an envelope.

"It's from your father."

I stared.

"I've already read everything."

"No."

"This is different."

I opened it.

My father's handwriting.

My heart stopped.

Mabel,

If you are reading this, the Black Ledger is probably gone.

But there is one final thing I never told you.

I lied when I said there were two heirs.

I stopped.

My hands began shaking.

There were three.

I looked at Flynn.

He had tears in his eyes.

I continued.

Alexander was not your twin.

My breathing stopped.

He was Eleanor's son from another man.

I stared at the page.

I adopted him.

I loved him.

And when the Black Ledger discovered his existence, they took him.

The next paragraph made my blood freeze.

But the third heir is not Alexander.

I read the next sentence twice.

The third heir is Clara.

I dropped the letter.

Flynn stared at me.

"Mabel..."

I looked at him.

"Does Clara have Hart blood?"

He nodded.

"Your blood."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your father ordered me never to."

I felt dizzy.

Then I remembered something.

The necklace.

The $110,000 necklace.

The tracking device.

Selina.

The staged affair.

The photographs.

Everything.

But one question remained.

"Where is Alexander?"

Flynn looked away.

"We don't know."

I picked up the letter again.

There was one final page.

I almost didn't open it.

Then I did.

My father's final words were only one sentence.

“If Alexander comes back, don't let him near Clara.”

The room went silent.

A notification appeared on my phone.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

Alexander was standing across the street from Clara's school.

Watching.

The message beneath the photograph contained only six words:

YOU SHOULD HAVE READ THE SECOND FOLDER.

I stopped breathing.

Second folder.

I looked at Flynn.

He stared at me.

"I thought there was only one."

Another photograph arrived.

It showed my father's old study.

The drawer I had opened three months earlier.

But inside the drawer was something I had never seen.

A second black folder.

And written across the front in my father's handwriting were four words:

DO NOT TRUST MABEL.

My heart stopped.

Then my phone rang.

A man's voice whispered:

"Mabel."

I knew that voice.

Alexander.

"You finally found it."

I couldn't speak.

He laughed softly.

"Now you're going to learn why your father was afraid of you."

The call ended.

I looked at the folder.

Then at Clara's photograph.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, I understood the truth.

The affair.

The necklace.

The company.

The Black Ledger.

My father's murder.

My mother's disappearance.

Even Alexander.

None of it had been the final game.

They had all been pieces.

And I had just picked up the one piece my father had spent his entire life trying to hide.

The second folder.

Whatever was inside it had terrified my father more than the Black Ledger ever had.

I reached for the drawer.

And before I could open it, someone knocked on my front door.

Three slow knocks.

I looked toward the hallway.

Clara was upstairs.

The house was locked.

No one knew where we lived.

Another knock.

Then a voice came through the door.

A woman's voice.

Soft.

Familiar.

My blood turned to ice.

"Sweetheart."

I couldn't move.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to my mother.

Eleanor Hart.

And she whispered:

"Open the door."

I stared at the second folder.

Then back at the door.

For twelve years, I had believed my mother was dead.

For twelve years, I had believed my father was protecting me.

For twelve years, I had believed Flynn was the biggest liar in my life.

I was wrong.

The greatest secret had been standing outside my door the entire time.

And when I finally opened it...

May you like

My mother was holding a gun.

And behind her stood Alexander.
