Chapter 9 - Ashley Offered Me the Truth for a PriceI left the Grand Meridian through a private entrance, accompanied by two security officers dressed as hotel employees.

Michael never reached me.

By the time he pushed through the ballroom doors, I was already inside Richard's waiting car, watching the hotel disappear behind tinted glass.

"Did you see his expression?" I asked.

Richard sat beside me.

"I saw it."

"For the first time, he didn't know what to do."

"Fear makes people unpredictable," he warned. "Don't mistake his panic for surrender."

I knew he was right.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

You need to hear what Thomas said about your son.

I stared at the message.

A second followed.

Midnight. Room 608, Halcyon Hotel. Come alone if you want the recording.

Richard read it over my shoulder.

"No."

"Richard."

"Absolutely not."

"I knew that would be your answer, so I already sent the message to Elena."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"You arranged this before asking me?"

"I suspected Ashley would contact me. She has no reason to trust Michael anymore."

"She has every reason to lie to you."

"Then Elena can make sure I survive the conversation."

Richard looked toward the security officer in the front seat.

"Double the detail."

At midnight, I entered a small conference suite at the Halcyon Hotel. Two investigators were positioned in the adjoining room, while another monitored the corridor.

Ashley sat at the table.

She looked nothing like the confident woman who had stood beside Michael at my funeral. Her makeup was smudged, her hands shook, and her hair had been pulled into a careless knot.

The moment she saw me, she stood.

"You're really alive."

I remained near the door.

"You already knew that."

"Not until I saw you at the gala." She swallowed. "Michael told me he'd seen a ghost. He wanted to know whether I'd arranged some kind of trick."

"Did you tell him about our phone call?"

"No."

"Why should I believe you?"

She lowered her eyes.

"Because I think Thomas is going to kill me."

I did not move.

"Tell me what you know."

Ashley removed a small digital recorder from her handbag and placed it on the table.

"Michael met Thomas in a private office six days before the hike. I was outside the door. I started recording because I thought they were discussing the money they owed me."

She pressed a button.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

"The policy must be paid before the trust review. Once the claim is approved, Carter can transfer the money through the companies we've prepared."

Michael answered, "And if she survives?"

A brief silence followed.

"She won't."

I felt my stomach tighten.

Thomas continued.

"The trust is the real objective. The policy is simply the quickest way to remove the immediate debt. Once Emma is declared legally dead, we can challenge the transfer restrictions on her mother's assets."

Michael asked, "And the child?"

Thomas's response was so quiet that Ashley had to increase the volume.

"An infant cannot interfere with a properly prepared financial arrangement."

The recording ended.

I sat down slowly.

They had planned to murder me, collect the money, and use my supposed death to challenge the restrictions protecting my inheritance.

Daniel wasn't simply an inconvenience to them.

He was a person whose existence threatened their plan.

"Where is the original recording?" I asked.

"This is the original."

"How did you get out of the gala without Michael noticing?"

"He was too busy trying to identify you."

I stared at her.

"You expect me to help you?"

"I expect you to understand that if Thomas discovers I kept this, I'm dead."

"You stood beside my coffin and smiled."

Her face twisted.

"I know."

"You wore my mother's necklace."

"I know."

"You helped my husband plan to murder me."

"I know!"

Her sudden outburst echoed through the room.

She pressed both hands against her face. When she spoke again, her voice was smaller.

"I wanted the money. I wanted the house and the life Michael promised me. I told myself it wasn't my responsibility to ask what happened to you. I told myself that if I didn't see it, I wasn't involved."

She looked up.

"But I heard you were alive, and for the first time I realized what he would do if you came back. He wouldn't stop. He would kill you again, and this time he'd make sure the baby died, too."

I could barely contain my anger.

"You don't get to turn yourself into the victim."

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"Good."

Ashley pushed a folder across the table.

"I also have a list of payments from Thomas's accounts. Money sent to Michael's company, payments to the investigator who watched your funeral, and transfers to a lawyer who arranged the insurance rider."

Elena's voice came through the hidden earpiece.

"Ask her about the original notebook."

I looked at Ashley.

"Where is my mother's red notebook?"

Ashley went pale.

"I don't have it."

"Who does?"

"I gave it to Thomas."

"Why?"

"He told me it contained personal information about your mother, nothing important. I didn't know what was inside until I overheard him discussing the old accident."

I leaned forward.

"What accident?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know. He mentioned a woman who was supposed to have died twenty-four years ago. He said if Eleanor was still alive, the entire structure would collapse."

My breath caught.

"Then Eleanor is alive."

Ashley stared at me.

"You knew about her?"

"She is my grandmother."

For the first time, Ashley looked genuinely frightened.

"Emma, listen to me. Thomas wasn't just trying to hide a crime. He was trying to find someone."

"Who?"

She gripped the edge of the table.

"Your grandmother. He thinks she has the only document that can prove who died in that accident."

Before I could ask another question, her phone began vibrating.

Michael's name flashed across the screen.

Ashley stared at it as though it were a weapon.

Then she answered.

"Where are you?" Michael demanded.

"At home."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

"I know you met someone tonight. I know you have the recording."

Ashley glanced at me.

Michael's voice became colder.

"You have ten minutes to bring me everything you took. If you don't, I'll make sure you go to prison for the rest of your life."

The call ended.

Ashley began shaking.

I stood.

"You're going to the investigators. You're going to give a complete statement, and you'll have to accept whatever legal consequences follow."

She nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.

Then she grabbed my wrist.

"Emma, there's something I forgot."

I looked down at her hand.

"Let go."

She immediately released me.

"Thomas has been searching for Eleanor's granddaughter for years. Not because of the trust. Because she inherited something from her mother that he can't afford to let anyone find."

"What?"

"I don't know. But he told Michael that if you ever discovered the truth about your grandmother, you would become more dangerous than either of them."

My phone vibrated.

Elena had sent an emergency alert.

UNKNOWN VEHICLE APPROACHING THE HOTEL. POSSIBLE THOMAS BELL ASSOCIATES.

The lights flickered once.

A second later, the fire alarm began screaming.

Elena shouted through my earpiece.

"Emma, get out! Now!"

Ashley grabbed her handbag.

May you like

I reached for the door.

Then I heard the unmistakable sound of gunfire in the corridor.
