Chapter 12 - The Man Who Sold Our SecretsRichard refused to believe that Jonathan Pierce, his security director of eleven years, had betrayed him.

"He has access to every property I own," Richard said. "He knows the security arrangements, the medical team's schedule, and the location of every person under our protection. If he's working with Thomas, we've been exposed from the beginning."

Elena placed the photograph on the table.

"That's precisely why we need to act carefully. If he realizes we're investigating him, he'll disappear before we can establish how much information he has passed to Thomas."

Margaret stood beside the door, speaking to two investigators through her phone. The atmosphere in the room had changed. Until that moment, the people surrounding me had represented safety. Now every familiar face carried a question.

Who had known where I was?

Who had access to Daniel's medical records?

Who had arranged the helicopter rescue, and who had been monitoring the mountainside before my husband pushed me off the cliff?

I thought of the black SUV approaching Eleanor's mountain house. I thought of the photograph of Daniel, taken through a window at a supposedly secure medical facility.

Then I remembered something Elena had mentioned earlier.

"Jonathan approved the transfer of the original security footage from the mountain rescue, didn't he?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes. He also had access to the initial incident report."

"Did Michael know we were searching for Eleanor before we went to the house?"

"We believe so."

I turned toward Richard.

"Your security director may have been feeding them information for months."

Richard looked as though someone had struck him.

"Jonathan helped organize the search for Eleanor when we believed she had disappeared permanently. He attended Grace's funeral. He helped me search for you."

"Or he helped make sure you never found us."

The words hung in the room.

Richard looked away.

"I gave him the authority to protect my family."

"Then he knows exactly how to hurt us."

Elena's phone vibrated.

She read the message and immediately stood.

"He's heading toward the private residence."

Richard turned sharply.

"Why?"

"His access card was used at the rear entrance fourteen minutes ago. He filed an emergency relocation request for Emma and Daniel, claiming that the current address has been compromised."

My stomach tightened.

"He wants to move us?"

"Without authorization from the medical team or the investigators," Elena replied.

Richard reached for his phone.

"Lock down the property."

"Already done," Elena said. "But we cannot assume he's coming alone."

She issued instructions to the officers stationed outside. Within moments, the security system began logging movement near the rear entrance.

I held Daniel closer.

His tiny fingers rested against my collarbone. He had no idea that the world beyond his blanket was full of people arguing over his future.

I kissed his forehead.

"You stay with me, sweetheart."

A knock sounded at the door.

Everyone froze.

A voice came through the intercom.

"Mr. Whitmore? It's Jonathan. We have an urgent security issue. I need to relocate Emma and the baby immediately."

Richard moved toward the intercom, but Elena stopped him.

"Let him explain first."

Richard pressed the button.

"What is the security issue?"

"Possible exposure of the current location. We need to move now."

"Who authorized the transfer?"

There was a brief pause.

"I did."

"Then you can explain yourself to the investigators."

Silence.

Then Jonathan answered in a completely different voice.

"Richard, don't make this difficult."

Richard's face hardened.

"Open the door. Put your hands where the cameras can see them."

A sharp impact struck the other side.

Then another.

The officers outside ordered Jonathan to step away from the entrance.

He ignored them.

The door rattled violently before the security system locked it.

I heard shouting, followed by a scuffle in the hallway.

Elena motioned for us to remain still.

A few minutes later, one of the investigators entered the room.

"Jonathan Pierce has been detained. He attempted to use an unauthorized override code to access the residence."

Richard looked at the floor.

"Did he have a weapon?"

"No firearm. But he carried two phones, a forged relocation authorization, and a list of addresses associated with the Whitmore family."

Elena placed the phones in separate evidence bags.

"He's coming with us."

I wanted to believe that the danger was finally shrinking.

Then an investigator returned with Jonathan's second phone.

A message had arrived moments before he was detained.

The sender was listed as T. BELL.

The message contained six words.

BRING THE BABY. LEAVE THE WOMAN.

Richard went white with rage.

Elena photographed the screen.

"That is enough to investigate a direct attempt to facilitate harm against the child. We'll submit the device for forensic examination."

I looked at the message until the letters blurred.

Michael had pushed me off a cliff to obtain money.

Thomas had treated my grandmother's life as a financial inconvenience.

And now they had discussed my infant son as if he were an object to be transported or discarded.

I felt something inside me settle into place.

My fear had not disappeared.

It had simply stopped making my decisions for me.

"Question Jonathan," I said. "Find out where Thomas is hiding."

Elena nodded.

"We'll do it lawfully, and we'll preserve every statement and record."

Before she left, I caught her sleeve.

"There's one more thing. Thomas has the original notebook, but Eleanor said she kept a copy. We need to find her before he does."

Elena's expression tightened.

"Jonathan may know where she's hiding."

For the next several hours, investigators questioned him. At first, he denied everything. He claimed the unauthorized entry had been a misunderstanding and that the phones belonged to an outside contractor.

Then they showed him the message from Thomas.

His story changed.

Jonathan admitted that he had provided information to Thomas for several years. He said Thomas had paid him to monitor the Whitmore family's private movements, first under the pretense of protecting Richard's assets, then to identify Eleanor's whereabouts.

He had also passed along my medical location after the rescue.

When questioned about the attempted removal of Daniel, Jonathan claimed he had not intended to let the baby leave the property.

"I was told to bring him to a secure location," he said. "I didn't know what they planned to do afterward."

Elena's response was cold.

"You were paid to deliver a newborn to people who had attempted to murder his mother. What you imagined would happen does not erase what you did."

Jonathan finally admitted that Thomas had arranged to meet someone at a deserted chapel in the mountains.

He did not know who would attend.

But he knew the location.

It was the same address written on the back of Eleanor's photograph.

And when Elena pulled up the map, I recognized the narrow road immediately.

It was less than twenty miles from the cliff where Michael had pushed me.

My husband had brought me into the mountains to make me disappear.

May you like

Now the same mountains held the evidence that could destroy every person involved.

And this time, I would not be walking into them alone.
