Chapter 3 - MY MOTHER'S LAST SECRETWe found the truth buried beneath thirty years of lies.

At least, the beginning of it.
Dad took me downstairs into a room I had never been allowed to enter.
There were no windows.
No computers.
No ordinary files.
Only metal cabinets.
He opened one with a key from his watch.
Inside was a single red folder.
My mother's name was written across the front.
ELENA VALE.
I touched it.
"Why did you keep this from me?"
"Because I wanted you to have a childhood."
I laughed bitterly.
"And instead I married Nathan."
Dad looked away.
"I failed you there."
"No."
I pulled the folder toward me.
"Nathan's father did this?"
Dad nodded.
"Your mother discovered that Victor Ashford was laundering government funds through shipping contracts. She found evidence that he was bribing officials, manipulating customs records and moving weapons through commercial ports."
"Then why didn't she expose him?"
"She tried."
Dad opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Dates.
And a police report.
My hands trembled.
"Why isn't he in prison?"
"Because your mother died before she could testify."
I stared at the report.
"Car accident."
Dad nodded.
"That's what they said."
I turned toward him.
"You don't believe it."
"I never did."
The car had crashed on a wet road outside Manhattan.
Officially, brake failure.
But Dad had spent years proving that the vehicle had been sabotaged.
The brake line had been cut.
The witness who saw the car had disappeared.
The mechanic who examined it changed his statement.
And Victor Ashford had purchased a private jet three days later.
My throat tightened.
"Nathan knew about this?"
"Maybe."
"But why would he marry me?"
Dad was silent.
That answer was worse than any explanation.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Nathan.
COME TO THE OLD ASHFORD WAREHOUSE. ALONE.
I showed Dad.
"No."
"I have to go."
"No."
"He's in federal custody."
Dad looked at the phone.
"Then someone is using his number."
We traced it.
The signal came from an abandoned warehouse in Newark.
Dad wanted to send twenty agents.
I refused.
Not because I wanted to be brave.
Because whoever was behind the messages wanted me isolated.
And I needed to know why.
We went with six agents.
The warehouse was dark.
Rain hammered the roof.
Inside, I found dozens of shipping crates.
One stood open.
There was a chair.
A table.
And a laptop.
The screen was already on.
A video began playing.
Nathan appeared.
His face was bruised.
His hands were bound.
"I know you found the files," he said.
I froze.
"If you're watching this, I'm probably already dead."
Dad stepped closer.
Nathan continued.
"My father didn't just kill your mother."
He swallowed.
"He killed mine too."
I looked at Dad.
Nathan's voice shook.
"My mother discovered what Victor was doing. She tried to leave him. He staged her suicide."
The video flickered.
Nathan looked directly into the camera.
"I learned the truth when I was eighteen."
He took a breath.
"And that's when he told me about your family."
My skin went cold.
"He said the Vales had ruined him."
"He said your father stole everything from us."
"He told me to marry you."
Silence.
I couldn't breathe.
Dad's jaw tightened.
Nathan continued.
"He wanted me to get close enough to the Vale network to destroy it from inside."
My stomach twisted.
"Everything was planned."
"The wedding."
"The business alliance."
"Even Celeste."
The video cut.
Then resumed.
Nathan looked broken.
"But there was one thing my father never anticipated."
His eyes lowered.
"I fell in love with you."
I stared at the screen.
Then another video appeared.
This one showed Nathan and Celeste.
Celeste was saying something.
We couldn't hear the first few seconds.
Then the audio sharpened.
"You promised me her father would die before she learned the truth."
Nathan looked furious.
"I never agreed to that."
Celeste smiled.
"You don't get to change your mind now."
Then she said something that made Dad go perfectly still.
"Because the person funding all of this isn't your father."
The video ended.
A single sentence appeared.
ASK ELIAS WHO REALLY KILLED ELENA VALE.
I turned toward my father.
He didn't speak.
"Tell me."
Silence.
"Dad."
He finally answered.
"I don't know."
But the look in his eyes told me he did.
And then the warehouse lights exploded.

Gunfire shattered the darkness.
Someone had been waiting for us.
