Chapter 11 - THE CHILD THEY HID FROM MEI couldn't breathe.

My mother placed the bracelet on the table.
"Lily was born twenty years ago."
I stared.
"That's impossible."
My mother looked at me.
"You were pregnant."
I remembered nothing.
Nathan slowly sat down.
"Your father hid it."
I turned toward Dad.
"You knew?"
Dad looked destroyed.
"We believed the child died."
"Did she?"
"No."
He lowered his head.
"She was taken."
By Evelyn.
That woman had stolen my daughter before I had even held her.
The entire ledger project suddenly made sense.
My mother had trained me to store information.
But Evelyn wanted a second carrier.
Someone who could inherit the same memory architecture.
Someone she could control from birth.
Lily.
My daughter.
Who had been raised under another name.
I asked the question I was terrified to ask.
"Where is she?"
Dad looked at Nathan.
Nathan answered.
"With Celeste."
I stared at him.
Celeste had been searching for my daughter.
Not me.
The entire marriage.
The accusations.
The abuse.
The financial scheme.
They had all been distractions.
Evelyn had wanted Lily.
We tracked her to an estate in Maine.
The house was surrounded by guards.
I entered alone.
The door opened before I knocked.
A young woman stood there.
Twenty years old.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
I knew those eyes.
She stared at me.
"You came."
I couldn't speak.
She smiled faintly.
"Mom?"
My knees nearly collapsed.
I touched her face.
"You're real."
She laughed.
"That's usually the part people figure out first."
I cried.
I didn't care who saw.
For twenty years, she had been told I abandoned her.
That I didn't want her.
That her mother had died.
That she had no family.
Evelyn had raised her under a false identity.
Lily stepped backward.
"She told me you were dangerous."
"She lied."
"I know."
Her voice changed.
"Because I found the files."
She held up a black drive.
"Evelyn kept everything."
"Everything?"
"My birth records. My father's identity. Your medical records. Nathan's orders."
My heart stopped.
"Nathan's?"
She nodded.
"He knew about me."
I turned.
Nathan stood in the doorway.
Lily looked at him.
"You told Evelyn when my mother came close."
Nathan's face hardened.
"I was trying to protect you."
"You lied."
He looked broken.
"I was eighteen when I found out."
Lily's expression softened.
"You could have told her."
He nodded.
"I should have."
Then the lights outside went out.
Lily looked through the window.
"She's here."
"Who?"
"Evelyn."
Gunshots erupted.
The windows shattered.
Lily grabbed my hand.
"There's a tunnel."
We ran.
Behind us, the house caught fire.
And as we descended underground, my phone buzzed.
One message.
From Evelyn.
You have the child.
Then another.
May you like
Now I'll take the father.
Dad's phone immediately went dead.
