Chapter 14 - The Last BetrayalMy Brother Had One Secret Left

Reed didn't deny it.
That terrified me more than anything.
“You knew she was alive.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Six years.”
I slapped him.
The sound echoed through the room.
He didn't move.
“You let me believe our mother was dead.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always have a choice.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“Not when Nolan had her.”
I froze.
“What?”
Reed explained.
After the fire, Mom survived.
She had been badly injured.
Nolan’s father found her first.
He kept her hidden.
Then Nolan inherited the network.
Reed discovered the truth six years ago.
He tried to rescue her.
He failed.
Nolan threatened to kill her unless Reed continued pretending she was dead.
“And you?”
“I protected you.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated me.”
“Yes.”
“You let Nolan think he could take my company.”
Reed closed his eyes.
“Because if he believed he had already won, he'd stop looking for her.”
I looked at him.
“You used me as bait.”
He flinched.
“I used the only thing Nolan couldn't resist.”
I was furious.
But beneath the anger was another feeling.
Relief.
My mother was alive.
“We have to get her.”
“We will.”
The livestream location came from the church.
We arrived with federal agents.
The church was empty.
Only one wooden box remained beneath the altar.
Inside was a recording.
My mother's voice.
Camille,
If you are hearing this, then Nolan has made his final move.
The archive is not a building.
It is a person.
I stared.
My mother's voice continued.
“The real records were never stored underground.”
“What?” I whispered.
“The evidence was encoded into financial transactions and distributed across three custodial trusts.”
Victor looked at me.
“My family. Yours. And the Mercer family.”
The final protection required all three heirs.
Victor's face changed.
“That's why the sapphire matters.”
My mother continued.
“The person who activates the trust becomes the controlling custodian.”
A pause.
“Camille, that person must choose whether to expose the truth or bury it.”
I closed my eyes.
Then came the final sentence.
“Your father trusted Reed.”
I opened my eyes.
“But I trusted you.”
The recording ended.
We found Nolan at the next location.
An old private airport.
He stood beside a black aircraft.
My mother was with him.
He held a gun.
Federal agents surrounded the runway.
Nolan smiled.
“This ends tonight.”
I stepped forward.
“You're out of places to run.”
He laughed.
“No.”
He looked at my mother.
“She is.”
My mother looked at me.
Then at Reed.
Then at Victor.
And said:
“Camille, use the key.”
I reached for the sapphire.
Nolan raised the gun.
Victor shouted.
“Don't!”
But I was already holding it against the biometric panel on the side of the aircraft hangar.
The wall opened.
A hidden vault appeared.
Inside was one final box.
And on the box was a name.
NOLAN MERCER.
My husband stared at it.
His expression changed.
“That's impossible.”
I opened the box.
Inside was a wedding photograph.
My photograph.
But someone had circled one person in the background.
A man nobody remembered.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The man standing beside Nolan.
The man who had been financing everything.
I looked at Victor.
He whispered:
“That's the real owner of Mercer Dynamics.”
May you like
My mother smiled sadly.
“And he has been watching you since the day you were born.”
