Chapter 11 - The Deleted FileThe Secretary Who Had Been Recording Everything

The file was seventeen gigabytes.
Years of emails.
Voice recordings.
Scanned contracts.
Private messages.
And one folder labeled:
CAMILLE.
Inside were hundreds of files about me.
Not just surveillance.
Preparation.
My habits.
My meetings.
My passwords.
My friendships.
My insecurities.
Even old messages between my mother and me.
Nolan had studied me.
Not loved me.
Studied me.
Brielle opened another folder.
“Look.”
A video appeared.
Nolan was talking to a private investigator.
“Once the conservatorship is approved, Camille’s shares transfer automatically.”
The investigator asked:
“And if she fights?”
Nolan answered:
“Then we use the fraud accounts.”
I stared.
He knew the accounts had been created in my name.
He had planned to frame me for the money he stole.
Then another video.
Nolan meeting Dr. Price.
Then another.
Nolan meeting Judge Carver’s intermediary.
Then one more.
Nolan and Daniel Vance.
Daniel asked:
“What about Victor Vale?”
Nolan answered:
“He won’t invest if the wife is still visible.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then make her disappear.”
Brielle closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
“You saved all of this.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew one day he would try to destroy me too.”
She looked down.
“And you?”
“What about me?”
“I knew he'd come for you first.”
Silence.
Then she said:
“You were the only person in that company who ever treated me like a human being.”
I didn't know what to say.
Victor stood.
“We go to court.”
Reed nodded.
“No.”
Victor looked at him.
“We go somewhere else first.”
He opened a file.
A list of journalists.
Investigative reporters.
Regulators.
Banking authorities.
International fraud units.
“This doesn't stay private.”
Leah arrived.
She looked at the evidence.
Then she smiled.
“For the first time in twenty-four hours, I'm not worried.”
“Why?”
“Because Nolan built a legal argument around secrecy.”
She spread the files across the table.
“And secrecy is gone.”
At 8:15 a.m., every major financial outlet received the documents.
At 8:23, Mercer Dynamics shares halted.
At 8:41, the board scheduled an emergency meeting.
At 9:02, Judge Carver recused herself.
At 9:17, federal agents surrounded Nolan’s office.
At 9:30, Nolan called me.
I answered.
His voice was strangely calm.
“You think you've won.”
“No.”
“You have no idea what I can still do.”
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“Ask Reed what happened in 1998.”
I looked at my brother.
Nolan continued.
“He'll tell you why your mother really died.”
The line went dead.
I stared at Reed.
He looked sick.
“What happened in 1998?”
He didn't answer.
“Reed.”
He closed his eyes.
“There was a fire.”
“What fire?”
“At the Vale dinner.”
I stared.
“You said the dinner never existed.”
Victor’s face had changed.
“So did Nolan’s father,” he said.
I looked at both of them.
“Tell me.”
Reed finally spoke.
“The fifth person at that dinner…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“It was you.”
