Chapter 9 - The Woman Outside My WindowI thought my marriage was the danger. I was wrong. That night, we left.

The police insisted.

My sister packed the twins while I stood frozen in the hallway.

I couldn't stop staring at that photograph.

Someone had been inside the house.

Watching me.

Watching my daughters.

Watching us sleep.

We stayed in a secured guest apartment.

For the first time in months, I slept with both babies in the same room.

But I barely slept at all.

Every noise woke me.

Every hallway shadow looked like a person.

At 3:17 in the morning, my phone buzzed.

A message.

CHECK THE BABY CAMERA.

I opened the app.

The nursery feed was still active.

The camera showed an empty room.

Then something moved.

A figure stepped into frame.

A woman.

Evelyn.

She looked directly at the camera.

Then she whispered,

“You don't know what you're standing in the middle of.”

The feed cut out.

I couldn't breathe.

Claire arrived before sunrise.

She brought another file.

Inside were property records.

Corporate transfers.

Medical records.

And one photograph.

Evelyn and Brandon.

Standing beside Daniel Hart.

Years earlier.

My eyes widened.

“They knew each other.”

“Long before you met Brandon,” Claire said.

“How?”

“Business.”

“What business?”

She pointed to a company name.

Hart Biomedical Investments.

I stared.

Daniel had invested in the fertility clinic.

Evelyn had access to the clinic's financial systems.

And Brandon worked for a subsidiary.

This had started before our marriage.

Maybe before our engagement.

Maybe before the twins.

I whispered,

“Why did Brandon marry me?”

Claire's answer was quiet.

“We're still trying to figure that out.”

Then her assistant entered.

“Claire?”

She looked up.

“We got the court records.”

“What records?”

“Brandon filed something last month.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“An emergency custody petition.”

I stared at him.

Last month.

He had already started the process.

Weeks before the fishing trip.

Weeks before his speech about needing a break.

He hadn't lost his patience.

He had been building a case.

“What did he claim?”

Claire hesitated.

“That you were mentally unstable.”

I almost laughed.

“What else?”

“That you refused help.”

I stared at her.

“You mean after he stopped helping?”

“Yes.”

“What about the twins?”

“He says you are emotionally dependent on them.”

I felt sick.

Then Claire handed me the final page.

His requested outcome was simple.

Primary custody.

Control of the children's inheritance.

Ownership of the family home.

And access to the insurance.

I looked at him.

“He planned everything.”

“Yes.”

I looked down at the twins.

Their tiny hands were wrapped around their blankets.

They had done nothing wrong.

They were innocent.

And suddenly, I knew exactly what I was going to do.

I wasn't going to fight Brandon emotionally.

I was going to fight him on paper.

Every bill.

Every recording.

Every lie.

Every transfer.

Every false signature.

Every hidden account.

Every conversation.

I would turn it into evidence.

Claire smiled.

“That's the right decision.”

Then her assistant ran back into the room.

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“Brandon's custody lawyer withdrew.”

I blinked.

“Why?”

“He received new evidence this morning.”

“What evidence?”

She handed me a flash drive.

“Someone sent him the recordings.”

I stared.

“Who?”

She shook her head.

“We don't know.”

I took the drive.

There was one file.

Only one.

I played it.

Brandon's voice filled the room.

“I'll do whatever it takes.”

Then Evelyn answered.

“Even if she dies?”

I froze.

The recording continued.

Brandon whispered,

“If that's what it takes.”

The file ended.

I looked at Claire.

“That's not enough.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Then she smiled.

“But there's more.”

She opened another folder.

May you like

A folder labeled:

PROJECT LILY.
