Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Always Took His SideBrandon’s mother had spent years defending her son. Now she had something to hide.Brandon's mother, Evelyn, had never liked me.

She had been polite.

That was worse.

Politeness gave her room to insult me while pretending she was being helpful.

She once told me I was “too sensitive” when Brandon forgot our anniversary.

She told me motherhood would be “easier if I stopped expecting so much from my husband.”

And when the girls were born, she hugged Brandon first.

Not me.

She said he looked exhausted.

I remembered that now.

I remembered every little comment.

Every warning disguised as advice.

Every time she excused him.

Claire found the corporate records.

North River Holdings was registered under a trust connected to Evelyn.

And the twenty thousand dollars from our account had gone directly into the company.

“Why would his mother need your money?” Claire asked.

“I don't know.”

“Does she have financial problems?”

I shook my head.

“She owns three properties.”

“Then she isn't borrowing money to survive.”

My stomach tightened.

“What is she buying?”

Claire looked at me.

“We're not sure.”

That afternoon, I went home.

Brandon had been texting.

Why are you ignoring me?

Then:

We need to talk.

Then:

Stop involving other people in our marriage.

Then:

My mom called me. What did you ask her?

I stared at that message.

That was when I knew.

He was afraid.

I didn't answer.

Instead, I called Evelyn.

She picked up after three rings.

“Hello?”

“It's me.”

There was a pause.

“Why are you calling?”

“I want to ask you about North River Holdings.”

Silence.

Long.

Perfect.

Then she said,

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Yes, you do.”

“Who told you that name?”

“Does it matter?”

Her voice sharpened.

“You have no right to interfere in Brandon's finances.”

I almost laughed.

“Your son used money from my children’s account.”

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“He would never do that.”

“Then why did he?”

Silence again.

Then she said something I would never forget.

“Because he had to.”

I sat down.

“Had to do what?”

She realized her mistake.

“I didn't say that.”

“You just did.”

“I have nothing else to say.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Five minutes later, a car stopped outside my house.

Evelyn got out.

She walked directly to my front door.

I opened it before she knocked.

She didn't greet me.

“Where is the paperwork?”

“What paperwork?”

“The bank documents.”

“Why?”

“Because whatever you're planning, you need to stop.”

I crossed my arms.

“You're protecting him.”

“He is your husband.”

“He is my children's father.”

“And that's exactly why you need to think carefully.”

I stared at her.

“About what?”

“Custody.”

The word hit me like ice water.

“What about custody?”

“Brandon believes you're emotionally unstable.”

My mouth fell open.

“What?”

“He says you haven't been yourself since the babies were born.”

I laughed once.

“Of course.”

“He says you're overwhelmed.”

“I am overwhelmed.”

“Exactly.”

Her expression didn't change.

“He could use that.”

The room went silent.

She had just confirmed what Claire suspected.

He wasn't merely hiding money.

He was preparing a story.

A story where I was the exhausted mother.

The emotional wife.

The unstable woman.

And he was the calm father who simply wanted to protect his daughters.

I took a slow breath.

“Is that why you kept telling me I was too sensitive?”

She looked away.

I continued.

“Is that why you told Brandon I should see a therapist?”

She didn't answer.

“Is that why you wanted him to record our arguments?”

Her eyes snapped back to mine.

And there it was.

The truth.

I whispered,

“You knew.”

Evelyn's face hardened.

“You don't understand what you're dealing with.”

“What am I dealing with?”

She took one step closer.

“Brandon has debts.”

“I know.”

“He could lose everything.”

“I know.”

She looked frightened now.

“And if he loses everything, your children lose their home.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She frowned.

“I won't let him drag my daughters into his mess.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Do you really think you can beat him?”

I looked at her.

Then I said the sentence that made her go pale.

“I don't need to beat him.”

I stepped aside.

“I just need him to tell the truth.”

As she turned to leave, her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Who is it?” I asked.

She ignored me.

She answered.

I watched her face while she listened.

Then she whispered,

“He found out.”

She hung up.

“Who found out what?”

She looked at me.

And for the first time since I'd known her, Evelyn looked terrified.

“Brandon wasn't supposed to know you discovered the second account.”

Then she walked away.

May you like

Leaving me with one question.

Who had been trying to keep him from finding out?
