Chapter 11 - The Lawyer Who Betrayed MeDaniel's confession changed the investigation.

He wasn't innocent.
But he wasn't the mastermind either.
Police tracked his phone to an abandoned office downtown.
We arrived to find the place empty.
Except for one desk.
And a tape recorder.
Thomas pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
“I never intended to steal Claire's money.”
A pause.
“I intended to delay Evan.”
Another pause.
“But Richard threatened my family.”
The recording continued.
“Seven years ago, Gerald discovered that Richard had been stealing from the company.”
My father's name.
“Gerald confronted him.”
“Richard threatened Daniel's wife and son.”
“Daniel asked Evan for help.”
“And Evan offered a solution.”
I leaned closer.
“He told me to forge the trust.”
My heart sank.
“Evan said if I made him temporary controller, he could move the money safely.”
Thomas stopped the recording.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust was never supposed to be temporary.”
He looked at another document.
“The amendment was permanent.”
I stared.
“So Daniel was tricked.”
“Yes.”
“And Evan stole everything.”
“Yes.”
Then we heard footsteps.
Paige entered.
She looked exhausted.
“I found something.”
She held an envelope.
“What?”
“My mother wrote this.”
She handed it to me.
Inside was a letter dated six years earlier.
To Claire, if I fail to tell you myself.
I read.
Marian admitted she had once helped Richard hide the Ash account.
Not because she wanted the money.
Because Richard threatened to expose Evan's criminal activities.
She had hoped to protect her son.
Instead, she had created a monster.
At the bottom she wrote:
The moment I realized Evan would hurt Claire was the moment I knew I had protected the wrong person.
I looked up.
“Why didn't she give me this?”
“She planned to.”
Paige's voice shook.
“She was afraid.”
“Of Evan?”
“No.”
Paige looked at me.
“Of what Claire would think of her.”
I closed the letter.
The truth hurt.
But at least it was finally complete.
Then Thomas opened another file.
“The bank confirmed the Ash account.”
“What about it?”
“It wasn't Evan's.”
“Whose was it?”
He pointed to the beneficiary.
I read the name.
GERALD HART.
My father.
I stared.
“What?”
Thomas nodded.
“Your father created the account.”
“To hide money?”
“No.”
“To preserve evidence.”
Everything clicked.
The Ash account wasn't stolen wealth.
It was a vault.
Money transferred there had been tagged as evidence.
Every dollar corresponded to a fraudulent transaction.
Every payment.
Every payoff.
Every bribe.
Richard hadn't merely stolen from the family.
He had stolen from the government.
From clients.
From investors.
Evan had used the account to conceal the trail.
But someone else had accessed it.
Thomas pulled up the transaction logs.
A recent withdrawal appeared.
Not Evan.
Not Richard.
Not Daniel.
The user ID belonged to Marian.
I stared at her.
“Did you access Ash Holdings?”
Marian went completely still.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“Why?”
“I took money.”
My heart sank.
“Why?”
“To pay someone.”
“Who?”
Marian looked at Elena.
“To keep her alive.”
Elena looked down.
Marian continued.
“Evan found Elena six months ago. Richard wanted her dead.”
“So you paid someone to protect her?”
“Yes.”
The room fell silent.
Then Elena spoke.
“There is something Marian doesn't know.”
Everyone looked at her.
She reached into her bag.
“I wasn't the only child.”
Marian frowned.
“What?”
Elena placed a photograph on the table.
A young woman.
Same eyes as Gerald.
Same smile as mine.
Underneath the photograph:
Lydia Hart.
Marian stared.
“Gerald had another daughter.”
Elena nodded.
“And she's alive.”
I felt my heartbeat accelerate.
“Where is she?”
Elena looked at me.
“She works for Evan.”
The room went silent.
“Who?”
May you like
Elena whispered:
“Vanessa.”
