Chapter 10 - The Airport TrapEvan was at Gate 18.

Richard was with him.
Vanessa had been right.
They planned to leave the country with four million dollars.
But they didn't know the airport was surrounded by police.
We arrived under escort.
I stayed in the car.
My broken leg throbbed.
But the pain felt distant.
I had spent years trying to survive one man's cruelty.
Now I was watching the machinery of truth finally move.
The detective returned.
“They're inside.”
“How do you know?”
“Your husband used the same phone.”
I looked at the black phone in my hand.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
Claire, come to Gate 18.
My blood ran cold.
The detective saw it.
“You're not going.”
I shook my head.
“I think he wants me there.”
“That doesn't make it safe.”
I looked at Marian.
She had insisted on coming.
“Why would he want me?”
Marian answered.
“To control the story.”
I understood.
Evan wanted witnesses.
He wanted to perform.
He wanted one last stage.
The detective wouldn't let me approach.
Instead, police entered the terminal.
Minutes passed.
Then chaos.
Travelers turned.
A security alarm sounded.
Richard was dragged out first.
Evan followed.
His suit was still perfect.
Even now.
He saw me through the glass.
He stopped.
Our eyes met.
He smiled.
It wasn't his charming smile.
It was the smile of a man who believed he had one last card.
He mouthed:
“You don't know everything.”
Then police took him away.
The detective returned.
“Richard had documents.”
“What documents?”
“Your father's original estate records.”
“Where?”
“In his bag.”
I closed my eyes.
Finally.
Proof.
Or so I thought.
Back at the house, Thomas spread the documents across the dining table.
One page changed everything.
My father had not left the money directly to me.
He had placed it into a protected trust.
I was the beneficiary.
But not the controller.
That was Marian's role.
And after her death, control passed to...
I read the name.
Evan Vale.
I stared at the paper.
“No.”
Thomas nodded grimly.
“This version was altered.”
“How?”
“Forged.”
Marian looked at it.
“I never signed this.”
“Then how did it get filed?”
Thomas checked the registry.
“Three days after your father died.”
I looked at Marian.
She went pale.
“I didn't authorize it.”
Richard had forged the trust.
But then why had it been accepted?
Thomas discovered another signature.
A witness.
Paige.
I turned toward her.
“Did you sign this?”
Paige stared at the page.
“No.”
“It's your name.”
“I never signed it.”
Thomas examined the ink.
“It's forged too.”
Paige covered her mouth.
“Then who?”
Thomas went silent.
He compared the signatures.
Finally he whispered:
“Daniel.”
My heart dropped.
“My old partner?”
Thomas nodded.
“Someone had access to all of your legal files.”
“Daniel.”
“But why?”
Nobody answered.
Then the house phone rang.
An old landline nobody used.
I picked it up.
A man's voice said:
“Claire.”
Daniel.
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“Are you working with Evan?”
Silence.
Then:
“I was.”
My heart stopped.
“Why?”
“Because he threatened your father.”
“That was seven years ago.”
“I thought your father was dead.”
“He is.”
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I know.”
Then he said:
“I need to tell you something before Evan does.”
“What?”
“I was the one who signed the forged trust.”
My hands went numb.
“You destroyed my inheritance.”
“I was trying to protect it.”
“You don't get to call that protection.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard had my family.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
“My wife. My son.”
My heart pounded.
“Where are they?”
Daniel whispered:
May you like
“I don't know.”
Then the line went dead.
