Chapter 10: The Eighth Name

The rain began just before sunrise.

It fell softly across Black Hollow Reservoir, turning the surface into a sheet of rippling silver.

Sheriff Hale hadn't slept.

Neither had Emily.

The satellite phone lay on the command table.

Silent.

Harold Whitmore hadn't called back.

No one knew if he was still alive.

At 6:17 a.m., a convoy of federal vehicles arrived without warning.

No flashing lights.

No press.

Just black SUVs bearing a small seal on the doors.

Not the FBI.

Not Homeland Security.

A department no one on scene recognized.

A gray-haired woman stepped out, holding a leather briefcase.

She walked directly toward Sheriff Hale.

"My name is Eleanor Pierce."

She handed him a letter.

"By order of the federal court, this investigation is now under our supervision."

Hale skimmed the paperwork.

Everything looked legitimate.

Court seals.

Signatures.

Emergency authorization.

Judge Carter took the documents from him.

She read them twice.

Then frowned.

"The signatures are real."

She looked up.

"But the case number doesn't exist."

The woman smiled politely.

"I think you'll find it does."

Judge Carter didn't smile back.

"I've spent forty years reading federal case numbers."

She tore the first page in half.

"This document is a forgery."

Every deputy around them instinctively reached for their weapons.

The woman's expression never changed.

Instead, she quietly closed her briefcase.

"You've just made this much more difficult."

She turned and walked back toward the SUVs.

None of them left.

They simply waited.

Watching.

Inside the mobile command trailer, Deputy Carson finally opened the waterproof box recovered from the diver's camera pack.

It hadn't been there earlier.

No one knew who placed it inside.

The box contained eight manila folders.

Each marked with a handwritten number.

...

The eighth folder was missing.

Emily picked up Folder #3.

Inside wasn't a police report.

It was a birth certificate.

Issued twenty-six years ago.

The baby's name had been blacked out.

Parents: Unknown.

Status: Transferred.

"What kind of transfer?" Emily asked.

Carson shook his head.

"There are six more."

Folder #5 contained another birth certificate.

Same hospital.

Same date.

Different infant.

Same word.

Transferred.

Judge Carter slowly flipped through every folder.

By the time she reached Folder #7, her hands were trembling.

"There should be eight."

Emily looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Judge Carter placed the folders side by side.

"These children weren't chosen randomly."

She pointed to the dates.

"They were all born within forty-eight hours."

The forensic analyst suddenly called out from the laptop.

"I found something in the metadata."

He projected a faded spreadsheet onto the screen.

Across the top was a title:

Emergency Relocation List

Below it...

Eight names.

Seven had been erased.

Only one remained visible.

Grace Carter.

Emily felt the room spin.

"Grace..."

Judge Carter looked at her.

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"Not me."

She pointed to the surname.

"Carter."

Silence.

Then realization struck everyone at once.

The name wasn't Emily Walker.

It wasn't Emily Collins.

It wasn't even Grace.

It was Grace Carter.

The name the hospital had mistakenly displayed on Emily's file.

Except now...

It no longer looked like a mistake.

A radio crackled.

"Dive Team to Command."

Sheriff Hale grabbed the microphone.

"Go ahead."

"We found another entrance."

"To the tunnel?"

"No."

"A cemetery."

Everyone stared.

"A cemetery?"

"It's underwater."

Rows of stone markers stretched across the lakebed behind the old church.

Most had fallen.

Several were buried beneath silt.

But one grave looked different.

Its stone was clean.

Recently cleaned.

As if someone had visited it.

The inscription read:

GRACE CARTER

Beloved Daughter

1996-2000

Emily whispered,

"That's impossible."

The diver brushed away the mud from the base of the headstone.

There was another line.

One that had been deliberately hidden.

Grave Empty By Court Order

The trailer fell completely silent.

Judge Carter staggered backward.

"I never..."

Her voice broke.

"I never ordered that."

At that exact moment, Eleanor Pierce stood beside her SUV, speaking quietly into an encrypted satellite phone.

"They found the cemetery."

A man's voice replied.

"And the empty grave?"

"Yes."

A long pause.

Then he said,

"Begin Phase Two."

Pierce looked toward Emily through the rain.

"No more warnings?"

"No."

"This time..."

"...bring the eighth name home."

She ended the call.

Across the reservoir, thunder rolled over the mountains.

Emily looked down at the seven folders spread across the table.

Seven children.

One missing file.

One empty grave.

May you like

And somewhere...

Someone was still searching for the eighth name.
