Chapter 1: Buried Alive

The first shovelful of dirt hit Trent's boots just as the flashing red and blue lights broke through the pine trees.
For one impossible second, nobody moved.
The dispatcher was still speaking through the muddy phone.
"Deputies are approaching from the north entrance. Stay where you are."
Linda's lips trembled.
"No..." she whispered.
Trent looked from the glowing phone to the mound of fresh soil that covered his wife.
His wife.
Emily was still alive.
His face twisted with something between terror and fury.
"Dig!" he screamed at Mara.
"Dig her out!"
Mara didn't move.
She stared at the phone as if it were a bomb.
"You said she was unconscious..."
"I thought she was!"
Another siren echoed closer.
Dogs barked somewhere beyond the trees.
Then came the unmistakable sound of tires skidding onto gravel.
Trent lunged toward the phone buried beneath the dirt, trying to smash it with the shovel.
Emily heard the metal strike inches above her face.
The impact rattled through the earth.
She closed her eyes.
Not yet.
Just survive.
One more minute.
Another minute.
The straw between her lips had begun filling with damp soil.
Every breath tasted like mud.
Her baby kicked again.
Emily pressed both hands against her stomach beneath the crushing weight.
Stay with me...
Please...
Stay with me.
Outside, someone shouted.
"Sheriff's Office! Drop the shovel!"
Gunshots?
No.
Safety catches clicking off.
Heavy boots pounded across the yard.
Trent ignored every warning.
He stabbed the shovel into the dirt again.
"If she talks, we're finished!"
Linda grabbed his arm.
"Leave her! Run!"
"We can't!"
The sound of a police dog growling froze everyone.
Deputy Carson stepped around the corner with his weapon raised.
"Hands where I can see them!"
Mara collapsed instantly.
"It wasn't my idea!"
Linda slapped her.
"You stupid girl!"
Trent bolted toward the woods.
He almost made it.
A police dog slammed into his back before he reached the tree line.
He crashed face-first into the ground, screaming as deputies pinned him beneath their knees.
Emily couldn't see any of it.
She could only hear.
The shouting.
The barking.
The pounding footsteps racing toward her.
Someone yelled...
"Fresh grave!"
Another voice.
"We need shovels! Move!"
The first scoop of dirt disappeared from above her.
Sunlight still couldn't reach her.
But air could.
Tiny pockets.
Cold.
Sweet.
Life.
Emily cried for the first time.
Not loudly.
Just one broken sob that vanished into the dirt.
A deputy froze.
"Wait!"
"I heard something!"
Everyone stopped digging.
Silence.
Then...
A weak knock.
Emily could barely lift one finger.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
The deputy's eyes widened.
"She's alive!"
Everything exploded into motion.
Shovels flew.
Hands clawed at the earth.
Someone called for paramedics.
Another deputy shouted for oxygen.
The soil pressing against Emily's ribs became lighter.
She could finally expand one lung.
Then another.
Every breath burned.
The straw slipped from her lips.
She didn't need it anymore.
A beam of sunlight pierced the darkness.
It landed directly across her face.
Emily blinked against the brightness.
A gloved hand reached down.
"We've got you."
She wanted to answer.
Instead, blood filled her mouth.
The world tilted.
Strong arms lifted her from the grave.
Cold air wrapped around her mud-covered body.
The first thing she saw was the sky.
Blue.
She had never imagined blue could look so beautiful.
Then she looked toward Trent.
He was handcuffed.
Covered in dirt.
Bleeding from the dog bite on his shoulder.
Their eyes met.
For years she had searched his face for love.
Now she saw only hatred.
He smiled.
Actually smiled.
"You should've stayed dead."
The words were quiet.
Only Emily heard them.
A paramedic leaned over her.
"Ma'am, stay with me."
"Can you tell me your name?"
"...Emily..."
"And how many weeks pregnant are you?"
Her hand flew to her stomach.
The baby.
"My baby..."
The medic quickly placed a Doppler against her abdomen.
Seconds felt like hours.
Nothing.
Emily stopped breathing.
Another second.
Nothing.
The medic frowned.
"No..."
Emily whispered.
"No, please..."
Then—
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
A tiny heartbeat echoed through the speaker.
Strong.
Steady.
Emily burst into tears.
The medic smiled.
"Baby's hanging in there."
She kissed her muddy fingers.
"Thank you..."
Across the yard, Linda suddenly screamed.
"That's impossible!"
Every deputy turned.
An elderly woman had climbed from a black SUV that had just arrived.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
Dark blue coat.
She wasn't wearing a police uniform.
She didn't have to.
Sheriff Hale removed his hat the instant he saw her.
"Judge Carter."
Emily's heart nearly stopped again.
Judge Evelyn Carter.
The most respected judge in the county.
She walked straight toward Emily's stretcher.
Then did something no one expected.
She gently held Emily's hand.
"My dear..."
Emily stared at her through blurred vision.
"You..."
Recognition struck like lightning.
Ten years earlier...
Before Emily met Trent...
Before the marriage...
Before the fortune...
She had saved someone's life during a highway accident.
A little girl trapped inside a burning SUV.
Judge Carter's granddaughter.
The judge's eyes filled with tears.
"I've been looking for you for years."
Linda's knees buckled.
"No..."
She knew exactly what that meant.
Emily wasn't alone anymore.
Not anymore.
Judge Carter slowly turned toward Sheriff Hale.
Her voice became ice.
"I want every inch of this property searched."
She pointed toward the house.
"The basement."
"The barn."
"The well."
Then she looked directly at Trent.
"And especially wherever he doesn't want you to look."
Trent's confident smile disappeared for the first time.
Because hidden beneath that farmhouse...
Was something far worse than an attempted murder.
Something that had been buried long before Emily.
And as deputies pried open the rusted cellar doors...
A foul smell drifted into the afternoon air.
One deputy covered his mouth.
Another stepped backward in horror.
Then a flashlight revealed what lay inside.
Rows of children's shoes.
May you like
Dozens of them.
None of them matched.
