Chapter 12 - Beneath the GraveWe reached the cemetery before sunrise.

My mother's grave stood beneath a large oak tree.
The inscription had been weathered by years of rain.
I knelt beside it.
My hands shook.
Detective Morgan brought forensic equipment.
We searched beneath the soil.
Then we found a metal container.
Inside was a key.
And another cassette.
My mother's final recording.
"Elena, if you're hearing this, you're standing where I wanted you to stand."
I closed my eyes.
"Do not trust the first document."
The recording continued.
"The forged signature is deliberate."
"What?" Alex whispered.
My mother spoke again.
"Richard believes the trust requires my daughter's signature."
"But it doesn't."
A pause.
"The real transfer requires a blood oath document created by my father."
I looked at Detective Morgan.
Blood oath?
"What does that mean?"
He listened.
My mother continued.
"Richard knows about the company."
"He knows about the money."
"But he never found the original charter."
"The charter is the inheritance."
"The evidence is separate."
"The person who possesses both controls everything."
The recording stopped.
Then another voice began.
A man's voice.
My grandfather.
"If Richard has taken control, the charter must be recovered."
He described a hiding place.
An old clock in the original Voss headquarters.
But the headquarters no longer existed.
It had been demolished twenty years ago.
Detective Morgan searched records.
The land had been redeveloped.
A luxury hotel now stood there.
But historical plans showed the old basement had never been removed.
We went there immediately.
Hidden beneath the hotel was a sealed corridor.
At the end stood an old clock.
Inside the clock was a rolled parchment.
The original charter.
The bloodline clause.
The signatures.
The evidence that Richard's control was conditional.
But then we heard footsteps.
Someone was coming.
Detective Morgan pulled his weapon.
Alex pushed me behind him.
A man appeared in the corridor.
Richard.
He smiled.
"You found it."
Detective Morgan aimed his weapon.
"Richard Voss, you're under arrest."
Richard laughed.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"The charter isn't enough."
He looked at me.
"Because Elena is no longer the beneficiary."
My heart stopped.
"What did you do?"
Richard held up a document.
"Victor signed over his rights."
I stared at him.
"He can't."
"He already did."
Detective Morgan looked at the document.
It contained Victor's signature.
Richard continued.
"Victor was always weak."
Then he turned toward me.
"You should have stayed obedient."
I felt something inside me snap.
"You killed my mother."
"She knew too much."
"You tried to kill my baby."
"That was necessary."
"You ruined Claire's life."
Richard smiled.
"Claire made the mistake of believing she was untouchable."
Nadia stepped forward.
"You killed my daughter."
Richard looked at her.
"Your daughter is alive because I allowed it."
Nadia raised her gun.
Detective Morgan stopped her.
Richard continued.
"The problem isn't me."
He pointed toward the parchment.
"It's the Circle."
"The Meridian Circle?"
His smile faded.
"They know about the charter."
I looked at him.
"Then why are you still fighting?"
"Because they gave me one task."
"What task?"
Richard stared at my stomach.
"Make sure your child never inherits."
Then the hotel alarm sounded.
Police sirens filled the street.
Detective Morgan grabbed Richard.
But Richard didn't resist.
He smiled.
That was when I realized.
He wanted to be arrested.
Because something worse was already happening.
The lights in the hotel went out.
Then every police radio in the building went dead.
Detective Morgan looked at me.
"Everyone down."
A loud explosion shook the basement.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The corridor filled with smoke.
And when the smoke cleared...
May you like
the charter was gone.
So was Richard.
