Chapter 11 - The Hidden HospitalRoom 314 had been sealed for years.

But the key fit a door in the hospital basement.

Inside was a storage room filled with boxes.

Detective Morgan found one labeled:

ELENA HALE / PRIVATE.

My hands shook.

Inside were documents belonging to my mother.

Letters.

Photographs.

Audio tapes.

And a sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

"Elena,

I know Richard will eventually come for you.

When he does, do not fight him alone.

There is someone in his inner circle who hates what he has become."

I looked at Detective Morgan.

"Who?"

The letter continued.

"That person will have access to the original evidence."

A name had been blacked out.

But underneath it was another clue.

"Look at the ring."

Victor's ring.

The family crest.

Detective Morgan examined photographs.

The ring appeared in dozens of images.

Everywhere.

Then he noticed something.

The crest wasn't the Voss crest.

It belonged to an older organization.

A secretive business network.

The name was hidden behind a symbol.

He searched historical databases.

The symbol belonged to something called The Meridian Circle.

A private association of powerful businessmen, lawyers, doctors, and politicians.

Richard was one of its senior members.

The Circle had influence over courts, police, hospitals, and banks.

Nadia looked at the symbol.

"My father used to talk about them."

"Your father?"

"My real father."

I stared at her.

"Richard isn't your father?"

"No."

"Then who?"

She hesitated.

"Your grandfather."

The room fell silent.

My grandfather had fathered Nadia.

My family tree was suddenly a maze of secrets.

And the implications were terrifying.

Richard had married into the family.

He wasn't the bloodline.

He stole it.

My mother discovered everything.

Then Richard killed her.

But the trust had protected the bloodline.

Which meant my daughter now held the key to taking back what Richard stole.

Then we found the final box.

Inside was a cassette labeled:

MERIDIAN.

Detective Morgan played it.

A man's voice spoke.

Richard.

"If Elena discovers the truth, the child becomes a liability."

Another voice answered.

"We can remove both."

"Not until the transfer."

"When?"

"When the baby is six months."

My blood froze.

I looked at the calendar.

Today was exactly six months.

They had planned the attack for today.

The timing wasn't accidental.

My assault had been scheduled because the legal transfer could begin with my pregnancy reaching six months.

But there was more.

Richard's voice continued.

"What about Victor?"

"Use him."

"He may resist."

"Then use Nadia."

The tape ended.

Alex stared at me.

"They're still moving."

Detective Morgan nodded.

Then his phone rang.

The prosecutor.

Richard had not fled the country.

His plane had landed.

At a private airstrip.

He had returned.

"Why would he come back?"

Detective Morgan looked at the files.

"Because the transfer is happening tomorrow."

"Transfer of what?"

"Your mother's trust."

I felt cold.

"So he plans to stop it."

"Yes."

"How?"

Detective Morgan hesitated.

Then he told me.

"The trust requires one final document."

"What document?"

"The mother's confirmation."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Your signature."

My stomach dropped.

"I've never signed it."

Detective Morgan shook his head.

"That's the problem."

He held up the forged document from Victor's file.

"Someone already did."

I looked closer.

The signature was mine.

Perfect.

Almost.

Except for one tiny detail.

The signature dated six months earlier.

The day before I even knew I was pregnant.

I stared at it.

"They forged my signature."

Detective Morgan nodded.

"And if the court accepts this document, the trust transfers to Richard."

Alex clenched his fists.

"How do we prove it's fake?"

Detective Morgan looked at me.

"We need your original signature from that exact date."

I thought.

Then remembered.

Three years ago, my mother had given me an old birthday card.

She had written my name inside.

I still had it.

At home.

The problem was that home was no longer safe.

Detective Morgan's phone rang again.

This time, his face went completely pale.

"What?"

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Someone broke into your house."

"Did they find the card?"

"We don't know."

Then he added:

"They found something else."

"What?"

"A message written on your bedroom wall."

I stared at him.

"What message?"

He hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

"Tell Elena to look under her mother's grave."
