Chapter 2 - THE NAME HE NEVER KNEWVictor Calder did not shout.

That was what made him terrifying.

He simply looked at Kyle.

“Leave the house.”

Kyle swallowed.

“This is my house.”

My father glanced around.

“No.”

He took one step forward.

“It was never yours.”

Kyle's jaw tightened.

“I don't know who you think you are.”

My father gave a faint smile.

“That's the problem.”

The federal investigator moved closer.

“My name is Daniel Mercer.”

Kyle recognized him immediately.

The color left his face.

“You…”

Mercer opened a folder.

“Three years ago, Whitmore Holdings acquired transport contracts using falsified customs records.”

Kyle stared.

“That case was closed.”

“It was buried.”

Mercer looked at him.

“There's a difference.”

Thalia stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. You can't just walk into someone's home.”

Mercer turned toward her.

“Your name is Thalia Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“You're the beneficiary of a private trust funded by Whitmore Holdings?”

Her expression froze.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

My father looked at me.

“Bella.”

I walked toward him.

He gently touched the bruise on my cheek.

“You should have told me sooner.”

“I thought I could handle it.”

“You were never supposed to handle it alone.”

Behind us, Kyle suddenly shouted.

“This is insane!”

My father turned.

“No.”

His voice remained quiet.

“This is accounting.”

He gestured toward the investigator.

“Start with the acquisition contracts.”

Mercer nodded.

“Already done.”

He turned to his team.

“Search authorization confirmed.”

Kyle stared.

“You don't have a warrant.”

Mercer handed him a document.

“I do now.”

Within seconds, agents entered the house.

Computers were unplugged.

Documents were sealed.

Phones were collected.

Kyle ran toward his office.

Two agents blocked his path.

“Don't move.”

“I need my attorney.”

“You'll get one.”

Thalia grabbed Kyle's arm.

“Kyle.”

He looked at her.

“Fix this.”

He stared at her.

“What?”

“You said everything was under control.”

She lowered her voice.

“You said your people had handled the investigation.”

Kyle suddenly understood.

“You knew about this?”

Thalia shook her head.

“I knew nothing.”

My father watched them argue.

Then he turned to me.

“Go upstairs.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things you shouldn't have to watch.”

I looked at him.

“What things?”

His expression softened.

“Things your husband did.”

I froze.

Mercer approached.

“Mr. Calder.”

My father nodded.

Mercer lowered his voice.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“A hidden server.”

My father looked at me.

“Where?”

“In the basement.”

Kyle heard that.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Kyle's face had gone rigid.

Mercer noticed.

“You know something about it?”

Kyle said nothing.

I watched him carefully.

My husband had never been afraid of police.

Never been afraid of lawyers.

Never been afraid of business losses.

But he was afraid of that basement server.

That was new.

My father nodded toward Mercer.

“Open it.”

“I wouldn't recommend doing that without the forensic team.”

“Then bring the forensic team.”

Kyle suddenly shouted.

“You can't access that server!”

My father smiled.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The truth.”

Kyle stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

My father looked at me.

Then back at him.

“Oh, I know exactly what I'm doing.”

He turned to Mercer.

“Take everything.”

Mercer nodded.

The team disappeared into the basement.

Kyle collapsed onto the sofa.

Thalia stood beside him.

Neither spoke.

I walked upstairs.

My bedroom door was still open.

I entered slowly.

Three years of my life were inside that room.

Photographs.

Books.

Wedding gifts.

The bracelet Kyle gave me on our second anniversary.

I picked it up.

Then I noticed something.

The clasp was open.

A tiny metal piece was missing.

I frowned.

I searched the carpet.

Nothing.

Then I saw it.

A small black memory card beneath the dresser.

My heart stopped.

I picked it up.

There was a label.

One word.

BELLA.

I stared at it.

Why would my name be on a secret memory card?

I looked toward the hallway.

No one was there.

I closed the door.

Inserted the card into an old laptop.

A single folder appeared.

CALDER ARCHIVE.

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

There were dozens of files.

Financial reports.

Bank statements.

Private photographs.

But one document made my blood freeze.

OPERATION WHITMORE

I clicked.

A recording began.

Kyle's voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“We don't need her alive to get the Calder shares.”

My breathing stopped.

Then another voice answered.

A woman's voice.

Thalia.

“You're sure her father won't discover it?”

Kyle laughed.

“He thinks Isabella is just a nobody.”

The recording continued.

“Once she dies, everything goes to the husband.”

I stared at the screen.

My hands began to shake.

This wasn't about divorce.

It wasn't about cheating.

It wasn't even about money.

They had never planned to leave me.

They had planned to kill me.

And suddenly I understood why my father had said:

Finally.

He had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

I closed the laptop.

Someone knocked on my door.

I froze.

“Isabella?”

Kyle.

His voice sounded terrified.

“Open the door.”

I stepped back.

“Why?”

“Because you need to know something.”

“What?”

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“Your father is lying to you.”

I stared at the door.

Kyle continued.

“The man you think is your enemy…”

His voice cracked.

“…isn't the most dangerous person in this house.”

I slowly reached for the lock.

Then stopped.

Because from behind Kyle came another voice.

Thalia.

“Kyle.”

A pause.

“What are you doing?”

Kyle whispered:

“Nothing.”

Thalia answered:

“Then don't tell her.”

I stepped away from the door.

My hands tightened around the memory card.

Because now I knew one thing.

May you like

Someone inside this house had been working against me long before tonight.

And I had no idea who.
