Chapter 1 - THE FIRST BLOWThe first blow stunned me.

The second sent me to my knees beneath the crystal chandelier.

For several seconds, all I could hear was the ringing in my ears.

Kyle stood over me, breathing heavily.

His wedding ring flashed beneath the chandelier.

The same ring I had watched him slide onto my finger three years ago.

The same man who once told me I was the only woman he would ever love had just hit me twice because his mistress said I had embarrassed her.

“Look at her,” Thalia said.

She was sitting comfortably on the white sofa, one hand resting over her stomach.

“She's still pretending she's innocent.”

Kyle grabbed my hair and forced my head upward.

“You humiliated Thalia in front of my board.”

Blood ran from the corner of my mouth.

“She called me barren.”

Thalia rolled her eyes.

“I asked a question.”

“You told everyone I married Kyle for money.”

“You did.”

Kyle laughed.

The sound was colder than the marble floor beneath my knees.

“Didn’t you?”

I stared at him.

For three years, I had played the quiet wife.

I had worn simple clothes.

I had never shown off jewelry.

I had never attended business dinners unless Kyle specifically requested it.

I had never mentioned my family.

Never mentioned my father.

Never mentioned the name Calder.

Kyle believed I had grown up ordinary.

He believed my silence meant weakness.

He was wrong.

Very wrong.

Kyle released my hair and stepped backward.

“I’m done.”

He reached into his jacket and threw a thick folder onto the floor.

It landed beside my hand.

“Divorce papers.”

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

There it was.

Three years of marriage reduced to legal clauses and signatures.

Kyle smiled.

“I’m finally free.”

Thalia slowly stood.

Her heels clicked against the marble.

Then she placed a hand over her stomach.

“I’m pregnant.”

The room went silent.

I looked at her hand.

Then at Kyle.

His expression changed.

There was pride there.

Possessive pride.

He looked at her the way he used to look at me.

“Six weeks,” Thalia whispered.

I swallowed.

Something inside me cracked.

But it wasn't my heart.

It was the last piece of doubt.

For three years, I had wondered whether Kyle could still become the man I married.

Now I knew.

He never had been.

Thalia crouched beside me.

“You know what’s funny?”

I said nothing.

“You can scream. You can cry. You can even call the police.”

She smiled.

“But when this marriage ends, this house stays with Kyle.”

Kyle nodded.

“And you can stay in the guest wing if you behave.”

I looked around the room.

The portraits.

The expensive furniture.

The staircase where Kyle had kissed me on our first anniversary.

All of it suddenly seemed foreign.

Thalia leaned closer.

“Beg him.”

My eyes lifted.

She smiled wider.

“Maybe he’ll let you stay.”

I slowly reached into my pocket.

Kyle laughed.

“Calling the police?”

“No.”

I pulled out my phone.

“I’m calling my father.”

Kyle froze.

Then he laughed again.

“You don’t have a father who can help you.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You're right.”

His smile returned.

Then I finished.

“I don't have a father who can help you.”

The smile disappeared.

I pressed one number.

The call connected immediately.

“Bella?”

My father's voice.

Victor Calder.

Founder of Calder Dominion Group.

Billions in assets.

Banks.

Shipping companies.

Media networks.

Private security firms.

A financial empire that stretched across continents.

And the only man in the world who still called me Bella.

He heard my breathing.

“What happened?”

I looked at Kyle.

Then at the blood on my hand.

“He hit me.”

Silence.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Silence.

Then my father's voice changed.

“Where are you?”

“At the house.”

“Is he there?”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

Then:

“Don't leave.”

Kyle stared at me.

“What are you telling him?”

I said nothing.

My father continued.

“Bella, listen carefully.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Do not sign anything.”

My eyes dropped to the divorce papers.

“Why?”

“Because your husband just made the most expensive mistake of his life.”

The line went dead.

I slowly stood.

Kyle frowned.

“What did your father say?”

I picked up the divorce papers.

“He said nothing.”

I tore them in half.

Kyle's expression twisted.

“You stupid bitch.”

He stepped toward me.

Then his phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

He answered.

“What?”

His face changed.

I watched the blood drain from his cheeks.

“What do you mean the funding disappeared?”

Another call came in.

Then another.

His assistant's voice screamed through the phone.

“Mr. Whitmore, the bank froze the revolving credit line!”

Kyle turned toward Thalia.

“What did you tell them?”

“I didn't tell anyone anything.”

His phone buzzed again.

He stared at the screen.

MERGER SUSPENDED.

Then another.

INVESTOR WITHDRAWS COMMITMENT.

Then another.

EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING CALLED.

Kyle looked at me.

“What did you do?”

I wiped the blood from my lip.

“Nothing.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from my father.

Five minutes.

Then the front gates opened.

Black SUVs raced up the driveway.

Kyle stared through the window.

Three.

Five.

Eight.

Then more.

And at the center of them was a man in a dark suit stepping out slowly.

My father.

Victor Calder.

But he wasn't alone.

A federal investigator stepped out behind him.

Kyle recognized him.

The man Kyle had secretly paid months ago to bury one of his company's biggest crimes.

Kyle's face turned white.

My father entered the house.

His eyes landed on my bruised face.

For the first time in my life, I saw rage on his face.

“Bella,” he said softly.

Then he looked at Kyle.

“Who touched my daughter?”

No one answered.

My father smiled.

It was the coldest smile I had ever seen.

“Good.”

He took out his phone.

“Then we'll investigate everyone.”

And that was the moment Kyle Whitmore's empire began to fall.

May you like

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because my father had decided he was finished playing by the rules.
