Chapter 8 - The TrapHe Had Already Framed Me

We escaped through the basement.

Snow hit my face.

A vehicle waited two streets away.

We drove without lights until we reached a motel outside the city.

I thought we were safe.

We weren't.

Rachel opened her laptop.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“There are charges against you.”

My stomach dropped.

“For what?”

“Embezzlement.”

“From whom?”

“Briar Crest Holdings.”

I stared.

“That company belongs to Daniel.”

“Exactly.”

She showed me a police report.

According to the report, I had transferred nearly $800,000 from Briar Crest to an account in my name.

The date was the day before the airport incident.

The device used?

My laptop.

The authentication?

My credentials.

My signature?

Perfect.

I felt sick.

“He forged everything.”

Rachel nodded.

“And now he's using the records to make you look like the thief.”

I looked at the report.

“Can they arrest me?”

“They can try.”

“What do we do?”

“We prove the digital trail was fabricated.”

“How?”

“Your laptop.”

“It was in his car.”

“Exactly.”

We tracked the computer through the same network data Martin had found.

It had been connected again.

This time from an office in downtown Chicago.

Daniel's office.

The police wouldn't touch it without a warrant.

Rachel made calls.

Vanessa called someone.

Then she returned.

“I know a security engineer.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

By dawn, we had him examining the authentication logs.

He found something.

Every fraudulent transaction had been initiated from a cloned browser environment.

The account had been accessed from a virtual machine.

Whoever created it was attempting to imitate my device.

But there was one mistake.

A timestamp.

One millisecond offset.

Tiny.

Nearly invisible.

I knew what it meant.

“Daniel didn't use my laptop.”

Rachel looked at me.

“He used a duplicate environment.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

I pointed to the logs.

“The fake activity happened twelve minutes after my phone connected to O'Hare airport Wi-Fi.”

Rachel stared.

“I was still at the airport.”

Exactly.

That proved the timeline.

He couldn't have made those transfers from home using my laptop because I had physically been at O'Hare.

Someone else had.

We had an opening.

Then Vanessa walked into the motel room holding another document.

Her face looked devastated.

“What?”

She handed it to me.

“There's a second beneficiary.”

“For the life insurance?”

“No.”

“For the foundation.”

I read the name.

Robert Hale.

I looked up.

“So he isn't working against Daniel.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“He is controlling him.”

The picture suddenly became clearer.

Daniel wasn't the mastermind.

He was the heir.

He had learned the system.

Inherited the contacts.

Inherited the shell companies.

Inherited the fear.

And now he had tried to escape the family machine by stealing enough money to build a life outside it.

But someone had noticed.

Robert.

The money Daniel stole from the foundation had been moving into his own real estate network.

That's why they were fighting.

Not because Daniel was innocent.

Because he wanted out.

I asked Vanessa,

“What does North Star mean?”

She hesitated.

Then answered,

“It's not an account.”

“What is it?”

“A list.”

“Of what?”

“People Daniel's family has paid.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“Judges?”

“Yes.”

“Police?”

“Yes.”

“Politicians?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Witnesses.”

I felt cold.

“How many?”

“Thirty-two.”

Rachel stared at her.

“Thirty-two witnesses?”

“Thirty-two names.”

“Alive?”

Vanessa didn't answer.

That was enough.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice said,

“Claire, this is Detective Morgan.”

I relaxed slightly.

“Detective?”

“You need to come in.”

Rachel mouthed no.

“What is this about?”

“We found evidence connecting you to the missing money.”

I said nothing.

The detective continued.

“And we found your husband's car.”

My heart pounded.

“Where?”

“At a private garage.”

“Was my suitcase inside?”

“No.”

“What was?”

Silence.

Then:

“A body.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Female.”

Rachel's face drained of color.

“Do you know who she is?” I asked.

The detective said,

“We believe she's your husband's marketing consultant.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I couldn't speak.

The detective lowered her voice.

“Claire, there's something else.”

May you like

“What?”

“The body was wearing your clothes.”
