Chapter 7 - The Man in the HallwayDaniel Hadn't Come Alone

The door opened slowly.
A man stepped into the office.
Not Daniel.
Robert Hale.
For three seconds, none of us moved.
He looked older than in the photograph.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Cold.
Measured.
Familiar.
He looked directly at me.
“You look like your mother.”
I couldn't breathe.
“You knew her.”
“Yes.”
“You killed her.”
His expression didn't change.
“No.”
“Then why did she die?”
“She discovered something she wasn't supposed to.”
Rachel stepped in front of me.
“You're under investigation.”
Robert smiled.
“You have no idea what you're investigating.”
Vanessa emerged from the doorway.
Robert looked at her.
“You were told to stay away.”
“I don't work for you anymore.”
He sighed.
“Daniel was right about one thing.”
“What?”
“You were never loyal.”
Vanessa's face hardened.
“To criminals?”
“To survival.”
Robert turned to me.
“Your husband made mistakes.”
“He tried to kill me.”
“He tried to control you.”
“That's supposed to make it better?”
“No.”
He looked around the room.
“He never understood your mother.”
“What did she know?”
Robert didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the desk.
He opened a drawer.
Pulled out a cassette tape.
I stared.
“That's it?”
“Not quite.”
He placed it on the desk.
“Your mother recorded everything.”
“Where?”
“Here.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“You have her recordings?”
“I did.”
“What happened to them?”
Robert looked at me.
“Daniel doesn't know.”
That sentence changed the room.
Rachel stepped closer.
“Where are they?”
Robert smiled.
“You're asking the wrong question.”
“What is the right one?”
“What happened to the money your mother discovered?”
I stared at him.
“What money?”
“Seven million dollars.”
Rachel's face changed.
“Seven million?”
Robert nodded.
“Your mother traced it.”
“Where did it go?”
“Into an account she believed belonged to a charity.”
My chest tightened.
“What charity?”
“The Hale Family Foundation.”
The room spun.
The foundation wasn't new.
It had been running for decades.
Someone had kept it alive.
Different names.
Different trustees.
Same purpose.
Money in.
Money out.
Disappearances.
Robert leaned against the desk.
“Your mother found out the foundation was being used to wash money.”
“So she was killed.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“She was warned.”
“And?”
“She refused.”
I looked at him.
“What happened the night she died?”
Robert's expression finally cracked.
Regret.
Just for a second.
“Her brakes were cut.”
I felt the floor move beneath me.
“Who did it?”
Robert looked toward the door.
“Your husband.”
I couldn't speak.
Daniel was fourteen.
“He couldn't have.”
“He didn't physically cut the brakes.”
“Then who?”
“His father.”
Robert nodded toward himself.
“I gave the order.”
Silence.
“I didn't know the car would be hers,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You didn't know?”
“She drove the wrong car.”
“You killed my mother by mistake.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was almost more horrifying than a lie.
I wanted to hit him.
Rachel held me back.
“What happened afterward?”
Robert looked at the hidden room.
“I made sure the death was recorded as an accident.”
My voice shook.
“And Daniel?”
“He learned.”
“When?”
“That night.”
I closed my eyes.
All these years, Daniel had known.
He had looked at me across our dinner table.
Held me.
Kissed me.
Said he loved me.
While knowing the family he'd married me into had destroyed my mother.
Robert took one step toward me.
“Claire, I didn't bring you here to threaten you.”
“Then why?”
“To warn you.”
“About what?”
“Daniel is not your biggest problem.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Who is?”
Robert didn't answer.
Then I heard tires outside.
Several cars.
Doors slammed.
Rachel's phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
“Police.”
I almost felt relieved.
Then she shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“Those aren't police.”
She showed me the message.
UNMARKED VEHICLES AT THE HOUSE.
Robert moved immediately.
“There's another exit.”
“Where?”
“Basement.”
We rushed through the hidden room.
Before leaving, I looked back at the desk.
The tape.
I grabbed it.
We ran downstairs.
Then I heard a voice from upstairs.
Daniel.
“Claire?”
I froze.
He had come home.
His footsteps crossed the office.
He entered the hidden room.
Then his voice rose.
“Claire, I know you're here.”
Robert whispered,
“Keep moving.”
But I could hear Daniel now.
Not angry.
Not frightened.
Laughing.
“Run if you want.”
A pause.
Then:
May you like
“You're not going to like what I found in Rachel's car.”
My blood turned to ice.
