Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING VENUEWe returned to the place where my nightmare had begun.

The ballroom was empty.

The chandeliers were still lit.

The tables had been removed.

Only a single chair remained at the center.

Jared sat in it.

Beside him was Susan.

And on the floor behind them was my father.

Alive.

Barely conscious.

Ryan and Gemma stood nearby.

Dwight walked beside me.

The ledger was hidden inside my coat.

Jared smiled.

“Welcome home.”

I said nothing.

He looked at my wedding ring.

“Did you find the card?”

I froze.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

Susan laughed.

“You really thought the lawyer was the smartest person in the room?”

Christopher's betrayal suddenly made sense.

He had been useful.

But he had never been the final player.

Jared stood.

“You were always the key, Elizabeth.”

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“He planned the trust.”

“Yes.”

“He used the marriage as a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you let me survive?”

Jared smiled.

“Because I needed you to open the vault.”

I looked at the ceiling.

“Vault?”

Susan stepped forward.

“The company archive.”

She explained that the hidden ledger wasn't the only thing inside the trust.

The trust controlled access to a physical archive containing years of financial records.

The only person who could authorize access was me.

Jared had spent decades trying to reach it.

And now he had.

“Open it,” he ordered.

“No.”

Jared placed a gun against my father's head.

“Open it.”

Dwight moved.

Susan raised her weapon.

“Don't.”

I looked at my father.

He whispered:

“Do it.”

I shook my head.

“What?”

“Do it.”

He smiled.

“You already won.”

I didn't understand.

Then Dwight touched my shoulder.

“The archive isn't what they think.”

“What do you mean?”

“The trust has a fail-safe.”

My father nodded.

I finally understood.

Opening the archive wouldn't give Jared control.

It would expose everything.

Every transaction.

Every name.

Every recorded conversation.

Including this one.

The room was being recorded.

The chandelier.

The security cameras.

The wedding venue's old surveillance system.

My father's plan had begun years ago.

I stepped forward.

“Fine.”

Jared smiled.

I placed my hand on the biometric panel.

The screen asked:

AUTHORIZE RELEASE?

I pressed YES.

The building lights went red.

A siren sounded.

Then every screen in the ballroom turned on.

Documents began appearing.

Bank records.

Videos.

Emails.

Names.

Payments.

Jared stared at the screens.

“No.”

Susan backed away.

“No.”

Gemma started crying.

Ryan dropped his phone.

Police sirens erupted outside.

Federal agents stormed the building.

Jared pointed his gun at me.

“You stupid—”

Dwight tackled him.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Susan ran.

Agents caught her.

Ryan and Gemma were arrested.

The entire network began collapsing in real time.

Then one screen displayed a single document.

The original death investigation of my father.

The cause of death.

MURDER.

The room went silent.

My father stared at the screen.

I looked at him.

“Who did it?”

He didn't answer.

The document contained one final line.

AUTHORIZED BY: ELIZABETH'S MOTHER.

My blood froze.

I looked at the doorway.

Someone stood there.

A woman in a blue scarf.

My mother's scarf.

She smiled.

May you like

And said:

“Hello, sweetheart.”
