Chapter 1 - THE VIDEO IN THE FOLDER MARKED “X”I stared at the laptop screen until my eyes burned.

There was Dwight.

My husband.

The man who had kissed my forehead that morning and promised me I was the woman he had prayed for.

The man who had stood silently while his father slapped me twice.

And there was Ashley.

My maid of honor.

Her hand rested against Dwight’s chest.

Her wedding ring was nowhere to be seen.

Neither of them noticed the camera.

The video had clearly been recorded in Dwight’s car, parked outside the restaurant where Ashley and I had celebrated my bachelorette party.

Ashley laughed first.

“You're really going through with it?”

Dwight smiled.

“I have to.”

“With her?”

“With Elizabeth.”

Ashley’s expression tightened.

“And after six months?”

Dwight leaned closer.

“She'll give me everything.”

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?”

Ashley whispered the words.

“The house. The money. The account.”

Dwight smiled again.

“She trusts me.”

The video continued.

Ashley asked, “And your family?”

“They'll handle her.”

A cold sensation spread across my back.

“Your father actually agreed to this?”

“He wants the house transferred. My mother wants control of the money. Gemma needs help paying off her debt. Ryan wants a car.”

Ashley looked worried.

“And what do I get?”

Dwight kissed her.

“You get me.”

I stopped the video.

For several seconds I couldn't breathe.

Then I replayed it.

Again.

And again.

The words didn't change.

She'll give me everything.

I sat back and stared at the ceiling.

My entire marriage had been planned before I had even walked down the aisle.

The wedding.

The apartment.

The money.

The sudden demand that I contribute $800 every month.

The ridiculous household list.

None of it was random.

They weren't trying to make me fit into the family.

They were trying to strip me down piece by piece.

My phone vibrated.

Dwight.

Where are you?

Another message.

We need to talk.

Then another.

Don't do anything stupid.

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because suddenly I understood.

They were afraid.

I opened the folder again.

There were twelve files.

Not one.

Twelve.

I clicked the second.

It showed Dwight talking to his father.

The third showed Susan speaking to Ashley.

The fourth showed a bank statement.

My name was on it.

So was Dwight's.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note.

Once she signs, everything moves.

I zoomed in.

At the bottom was a date.

The date of our wedding.

My hands started shaking.

They had planned to take control of my money on the day I married Dwight.

Then another file caught my attention.

It was labeled:

FINAL TRANSFER

I opened it.

A document appeared.

My signature was already there.

Forged.

I stared at it in disbelief.

They had already prepared a transfer of $48,000 from our joint account.

My name was attached to an authorization I had never signed.

Then my phone rang.

Christopher.

My lawyer.

I answered immediately.

“Elizabeth, don't go back to that apartment.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“Good. Because I just received something.”

“What?”

“A bank notification.”

My heart stopped.

“What happened?”

“Someone attempted to move the entire wedding fund.”

I swallowed.

“Did it go through?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Your bank flagged it.”

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since the wedding, I felt something other than fear.

They had tried to rob me.

And they had left evidence.

Christopher's voice became serious.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“The apartment you thought you bought with Dwight?”

“Yes?”

“It isn't owned by Dwight.”

I frowned.

“Then who owns it?”

Christopher didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost a whisper.

“Your father-in-law.”

I looked back at the laptop.

The folder labeled X.

And suddenly I wondered whether the slaps, the laundry, the screaming, and the staged family chaos had all been distractions.

Maybe they hadn't wanted me to leave.

Maybe they had wanted me so angry that I would walk away from everything.

Including the one thing they were desperate to keep hidden.

“Christopher,” I said slowly.

“What?”

“Find out why Dwight married me.”

There was silence.

May you like

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“I already did.”
