Chapter 5 - The First FileThe photograph spread across the internet before breakfast.

Dad's face was everywhere.
The body beside him belonged to a former company accountant.
I recognized him.
I had seen his name in the letters.
Marcus Vale.
News vans arrived outside Blackwood Manor.
Police cars followed.
Kyle disappeared through the garage.
Mom sat motionless.
I stared at the screen.
The man who had sent the photograph had released everything.
Bank records.
Property transfers.
Secret contracts.
Encrypted emails.
For twenty years, my family had constructed a respectable empire over a graveyard of lies.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
A lawyer stood outside.
Black suit.
Silver tie.
Leather briefcase.
“I represent your father.”
“I don't want a lawyer.”
“You'll want this.”
He handed me a sealed envelope.
Inside was a key.
And a note.
Midnight. Rosewood Cemetery. Grave 119. Come alone.
I looked at him.
“Who sent this?”
The lawyer smiled faintly.
“Your father.”
“That doesn't make sense. He's in custody.”
“He wasn't when he wrote it.”
The lawyer turned to leave.
“Wait.”
He stopped.
“What is my father hiding?”
The lawyer looked at me.
“Not your father.”
Then he walked away.
At midnight, I drove to Rosewood Cemetery.
The fog was thick.
Graves disappeared into the darkness.
I found number 119.
It belonged to a woman named Eleanor Thorne.
My father's mother.
My grandmother.
I knelt.
There was a small metal box beneath the stone.
The key opened it.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
One showed my mother.
One showed Dad.
One showed the man from the photograph.
All three were standing together.
Behind them was a building.
Blackstone Holdings.
But there was something else.
A photograph of me.
As a newborn.
On the back:
SUBJECT 47.
I found a folder beneath the photographs.
The first page made my hands numb.
PROJECT ORCHID
Children.
Identity transfers.
Inheritance manipulation.
Medical records.
My entire childhood had been part of a controlled operation.
I heard a branch snap behind me.
I turned.
Nobody.
Then a voice whispered from the darkness.
“You finally came.”
The man from the SUV stepped into view.
I reached for my phone.
He raised his hands.
“Don't.”
“Who are you?”
“My name is Adrian Vale.”
I stared at him.
“Marcus Vale was your father?”
He nodded.
“The man your family murdered.”
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you call yourself my father?”
Adrian's eyes filled with anger.
“Because I am.”
He pointed to the folder.
“They stole you when you were born.”
My breath caught.
“And your mother helped them.”
I turned toward him.
“She saved me.”
“She helped them first.”
He reached into his coat.
I prepared myself.
Instead, he handed me a DNA test.
I opened it.
The result was absolute.
Adrian Vale.
Biological father.
99.9998%.
I looked up.
May you like
He said four words.
“Your mother sold you.”
