Chapter 14 - DanielI couldn't move.

Daniel stood ten feet away.

The same man who had beaten me.

The same man who had raised me.

The same man everyone believed was in custody.

He smiled.

“Miss me?”

Adrian pulled out a gun.

Daniel laughed.

“You still haven't learned.”

He nodded toward the ceiling.

Red laser dots appeared on Adrian's chest.

Snipers.

“Put it down.”

Adrian slowly lowered the weapon.

Daniel looked at me.

“You've finally found the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That blood doesn't matter.”

He walked closer.

“You spent your entire life thinking you were a victim.”

“I am.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You were an investment.”

My stomach twisted.

“Who am I?”

Daniel smiled.

“That is the question.”

He tossed a folder at my feet.

Inside were three DNA reports.

One matched Adrian.

One matched a woman I had never seen.

One was inconclusive.

Daniel said:

“The consortium created Subject 47 from multiple genetic samples.”

I stared at him.

“That's impossible.”

“Not anymore.”

He explained.

My DNA had been altered through an experimental procedure as an infant.

They wanted to create a person who could legally access multiple family trusts.

A human key.

I felt sick.

“You made me.”

“No.”

Daniel smiled.

“Your grandfather did.”

Then he said something else.

“Kyle knows too.”

“Where is he?”

Daniel laughed.

“Closer than you think.”

The kitchen door opened.

Kyle walked inside.

His face was bruised.

His shirt covered in blood.

I stared.

“You're working with him?”

Kyle looked at Daniel.

“No.”

Then he looked at me.

“I came to stop him.”

Daniel sighed.

“Always disappointing.”

Kyle raised a gun.

He shot Daniel.

The room erupted.

Daniel fell.

Kyle shouted:

“RUN!”

I grabbed Emily.

We ran through the hallway.

Behind us, gunshots echoed.

Then a voice screamed.

Kyle.

We stopped.

I wanted to go back.

Emily grabbed me.

“No.”

“Kyle.”

“He's your brother.”

“Exactly.”

She looked at me.

“That's why they knew you'd come back.”

Then we heard Daniel laughing.

Alive.

“You can't kill me!”

A second later, the house exploded.

The windows shattered.

Fire tore through the kitchen.

We were thrown into the yard.

Smoke filled the sky.

I crawled to my feet.

Blackwood Manor burned behind us.

Emily pulled me away.

Then a phone buzzed in my pocket.

A new message.

From Kyle.

DON'T TRUST EMILY.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

SHE'S THE ONE WHO SOLD YOU.
