Chapter 13 - The voice was old.Calm.

Almost gentle.

Elena stared at the ceiling.

“Who are you?”

A recording began playing.

A man appeared on the projector.

Matteo Moretti.

Older now.

Alive.

Elena couldn't move.

Dante looked as if he'd been struck.

“You died.”

Matteo smiled.

“That's what everyone was told.”

Dante's fists tightened.

“You let us believe you were dead.”

“I had to.”

“For eleven years?”

“For much longer.”

Matteo looked at Elena.

“My daughter.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't have a father.”

“You do.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I protected you.”

“By pretending to be dead?”

“By becoming invisible.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.”

Matteo smiled.

“Because you were the key.”

“To what?”

“The city.”

He explained.

Haven Point had been built over the original Mercer-Moretti infrastructure.

A network designed decades earlier.

Whoever controlled it could redirect water, energy and transportation across the waterfront.

The redevelopment contract wasn't worth $460 million.

It was worth billions in political leverage.

Claire discovered the system.

She planned to expose it.

Matteo wanted to control it.

Harold wanted to steal it.

Dante wanted to destroy it.

And Elena had unknowingly become the only person capable of unlocking it.

“Why me?”

“Because Claire encoded the final authorization into your memory.”

Elena stared.

“Why?”

“She trusted you more than anyone.”

A door opened behind Matteo's image.

Harold entered the frame.

Elena's face hardened.

Matteo looked at him.

“You failed.”

Harold smiled.

“She remembered.”

Matteo shook his head.

“No. She remembered the wrong thing.”

He looked at Elena.

“You don't need the archive anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your wedding ring.”

Elena looked down.

The platinum band.

D.M.

Matteo said:

“Take it off.”

She did.

The inner edge split open.

A tiny memory chip was embedded beneath the metal.

Elena stared.

Dante whispered:

“Claire.”

Matteo's voice softened.

“She knew you would marry Dante.”

Elena looked at him.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

The room fell silent.

Claire had predicted everything.

The ring.

Dante.

The archive.

The conspiracy.

Every piece had been engineered years in advance.

Elena inserted the chip into an old computer.

The screen opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Bank transfers.

Bribes.

Political deals.

Murder records.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Evidence against everyone.

Then one file opened automatically.

DANTE MORETTI

Elena stared.

Inside was a video.

Dante, years younger.

Standing beside Claire.

Claire said:

“You can't tell Elena.”

Dante answered:

“She deserves the truth.”

Claire shook her head.

“She deserves a chance at a normal life.”

Dante looked at her.

“What if she remembers?”

“Then protect her.”

The video ended.

Elena looked at him.

“You knew.”

“I knew Claire planned to erase the memory.”

“You knew I saw the murder.”

“Yes.”

“And you still married me.”

“I thought I could keep you safe.”

Elena's voice broke.

“You shouldn't have been in my life.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Dante's eyes filled.

“Because when I found you years later, you didn't remember me.”

Elena froze.

“I saw you in a café.”

“What?”

“You were twenty.”

“You knew me?”

“You smiled at me.”

She remembered.

A quiet café.

A man in black.

A feeling of familiarity she couldn't explain.

Dante had watched her from across the room.

Then walked away.

He had spent years protecting her from a distance.

Until one day he stopped.

Because he loved her.

Elena cried silently.

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid you'd disappear.”

A gunshot shattered the projector.

Matteo's image vanished.

Isabella fell.

Elena screamed.

Dante caught her.

Harold stood on the staircase.

Behind him was a man.

Older.

Cold eyes.

Matteo.

Not a recording.

Alive.

He looked at Elena.

“It's time to come home.”

Dante raised his gun.

May you like

Matteo smiled.

“You still can't shoot your father.”
