CHAPTER 13: THE BETRAYAL BURIED FIFTEEN YEARS

The truth has a strange way of waiting.

It does not disappear.

It does not die.

It simply stays hidden until someone is brave enough, or desperate enough, to uncover it.

For fifteen years, I believed I knew the story of my wife’s death.

A tragic accident.

A terrible consequence of getting too close to dangerous people.

A wound that would never completely heal.

But now everything had changed.

Because the person standing behind the entire Blackwood empire had given me a possibility I never allowed myself to consider.

Claire’s death was not the end of a conspiracy.

It was part of one.

And the person responsible might have been someone standing beside me.

Someone I trusted.

Someone I never suspected.

The next morning, Daniel arrived before sunrise.

He looked exhausted.

That usually meant one of two things.

Either he found something important.

Or he found something terrible.

This time, it was both.

He placed a folder on my table.

“I traced the original investigation files.”

I opened them.

“From fifteen years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Impossible.”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s what I thought.”

He pointed at the documents.

“The official records were altered.”

I looked carefully.

Dates changed.

Statements removed.

Evidence missing.

Someone had rewritten history.

“How many people had access?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Very few.”

“Names.”

He looked at me.

“Your old partner.”

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

“No.”

Daniel didn’t speak.

“No.”

I repeated.

Because some answers hurt more when they sound possible.

“My partner is dead.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you saying his name?”

Daniel opened another document.

“Because he wasn’t working alone.”

I looked down.

A signature.

A name.

A person who approved the changes.

My heart slowed.

Because I recognized it.

Not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

Someone from my past.

Someone who knew Claire.

Someone who knew me.

“Arthur…”

I looked at Daniel.

“Who?”

He pointed.

“Michael Grant.”

The name stayed in the air.

Michael.

My closest friend.

My partner.

The man who stood beside me during the Blackwood investigation.

The man who helped me survive some of the darkest moments of my life.

The man who came to my house after Claire died.

The man who told me:

“Arthur, you have to move forward.”

I remembered those words.

Now they sounded different.

Not comforting.

Almost like instructions.

I sat alone for several minutes.

Lily found me there.

She immediately noticed something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I didn’t answer.

She walked closer.

“Dad.”

I looked at her.

“Your mother trusted someone.”

“Who?”

I struggled with the words.

“Someone I trusted too.”

She sat beside me.

“Is it the person who hurt her?”

“I don’t know.”

That was the hardest part.

After everything.

After Richard.

After Marcus.

After Alexander Crowe.

I wanted certainty.

But truth rarely arrives clean.

It arrives broken.

In pieces.

And you have to decide whether you are willing to bleed while putting them together.

Daniel continued investigating Michael.

The results were disturbing.

After Claire’s death, Michael received promotions.

Better positions.

More influence.

His career grew while mine collapsed.

At the time, I thought it was because he was better at handling the system.

Now I wondered.

Maybe he was rewarded.

I looked through the documents.

Payments.

Connections.

Meetings.

One file caught my attention.

A meeting record.

A private meeting between Michael Grant and Alexander Crowe.

The date was two weeks before Claire died.

My hands became still.

Lily saw it.

“Dad?”

I closed my eyes.

The pieces were connecting.

Michael knew Alexander.

Michael knew the Circle.

Michael knew everything.

But why?

Why betray us?

Why betray Claire?

That night, I went to the place where Claire and I used to spend time.

An old park near the river.

She loved that place.

She said it reminded her that the world could still be quiet.

I sat on the bench.

For the first time in fifteen years, I allowed myself to ask the question I avoided.

“Did you know?”

The wind moved through the trees.

No answer.

Of course.

But then I remembered something.

A small detail.

Something I ignored.

The week before Claire died, she tried to tell me something.

I was busy.

I was following leads.

I was convinced I was close to destroying the Blackwoods.

She had looked at me and said:

“Arthur, what if the person helping you is the person you should fear?”

At the time, I thought she meant someone inside Blackwood’s organization.

I was wrong.

She was warning me.

About Michael.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Tell me.”

His voice was serious.

“Arthur, I found Michael.”

“Where?”

“He’s alive.”

I froze.

“What?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Everyone thought he died five years ago.”

My expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because that’s what the records say.”

“And reality?”

A pause.

“He’s been living under another name.”

The rain started falling.

Again.

Like the world itself was repeating a pattern.

“Where is he?”

Daniel gave me an address.

I stood.

Lily looked at me.

“Who is it?”

I looked at her.

“The person who may know what happened to your mother.”

The location was an old cabin outside the city.

Far away from everything.

A place where someone could disappear.

I arrived alone.

The door opened before I knocked.

A man stood there.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Michael Grant.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“Arthur.”

I stared at him.

“You’re alive.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Pain crossed his face.

“Because I was afraid.”

I almost laughed.

The man who betrayed us was afraid.

“You let Claire die.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I tried to save her.”

My expression hardened.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I expect you to hate me.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“But I need you to know the truth.”

He stepped aside.

Inside the cabin was a wall covered with photographs.

Documents.

Names.

The Circle.

Blackwood.

Marcus.

Richard.

And one picture in the center.

Claire.

Michael noticed my eyes.

“She found the real leader.”

“Alexander Crowe?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

My body froze.

“Then who?”

Michael looked at me.

His voice broke.

“The person who ordered everything.”

A pause.

“The person Alexander Crowe answered to.”

The room became colder.

“Who?”

Michael looked toward Claire’s picture.

Then whispered:

“The person closest to you.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

Michael nodded sadly.

“Yes.”

He said the words I never wanted to hear.

“The person who betrayed Claire…”

May you like

“Was your own brother.”
