CHAPTER 12: THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

The arrest of Richard Blackwood and Marcus Vane became the biggest story in the city.

For the first time in years, the Blackwood name was not connected to success.

Not charity.

Not business.

Not influence.

It was connected to crimes.

The same newspapers that once praised Richard now questioned him.

The same people who attended his Easter parties now claimed they had always suspected something was wrong.

That was how the world worked.

When powerful people fell, everyone suddenly remembered the cracks they ignored.

But I knew better.

Richard’s downfall was not the end.

It was only the first door opening.

Because the message on my phone proved one thing.

Someone was still watching.

Someone above Richard.

Someone above Marcus.

Someone who had enough confidence to let two of their own people fall.

That person was the real danger.

Three days after the factory incident, Lily and Emily were staying at my house.

The quiet house that had once felt empty now felt different.

Not crowded.

Alive.

There were conversations.

Footsteps.

Small moments I had forgotten existed.

Lily made coffee in the kitchen.

Emily sat at the table, still struggling to believe she was free.

Three years trapped.

Three years believing nobody would find her.

I watched them from the doorway.

Two women who had been hurt by the same person.

But neither of them was defeated.

That mattered.

“Dad.”

I looked at Lily.

“Yes?”

“You haven’t slept.”

I smiled slightly.

“I’m fine.”

She crossed her arms.

“That means you haven’t slept.”

I almost laughed.

She sounded exactly like her mother.

The same expression.

The same way of knowing when I was lying.

“I’m trying to understand something.”

“What?”

I looked outside.

“Who is left?”

Lily became quiet.

Because she understood.

Richard was gone.

Marcus was exposed.

But the person controlling them was still free.

Emily looked at me.

“I know who.”

The room changed.

I turned.

“What?”

Emily looked nervous.

“I never told you everything.”

Lily reached for her hand.

“It’s okay.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“It’s not.”

She took a deep breath.

“When Richard kept me hidden, he talked.”

“About what?”

“About the person who helped him.”

I stepped closer.

“Who?”

Emily looked down.

“I never saw his face.”

That answer frustrated me.

But I waited.

Because fear always made people remember slowly.

“He was called…”

She stopped.

“Continue.”

“The Architect.”

The name felt strange.

Not a real name.

A title.

A role.

“What does that mean?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

She looked terrified.

“But Richard respected him.”

“Richard respected someone?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“That was the scariest part.”

That night, Daniel arrived with new information.

He placed a thick folder on the table.

“We found something.”

I opened it.

Inside were documents from decades ago.

Old business records.

Property transfers.

Hidden accounts.

The same pattern.

But this time, there was something different.

A symbol.

The triangle.

The mark connected to The Circle.

Daniel pointed.

“This symbol appears everywhere.”

“How far back?”

“Thirty years.”

I looked through the pages.

Names appeared.

Some familiar.

Some unknown.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Alexander Crowe.

I froze.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.”

I didn’t answer.

Because I did.

Everyone in my old world knew him.

Not because he was famous.

Because he was invisible.

Alexander Crowe was the kind of person nobody photographed.

Nobody interviewed.

Nobody blamed.

He never stood at the center of the room.

He stood behind whoever did.

He did not build companies.

He built people.

Politicians.

Executives.

Officials.

People with power.

People who could move the world while pretending they were only following orders.

“Arthur?”

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is he?”

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“He officially doesn’t exist.”

I almost smiled.

Of course.

People like Alexander Crowe did not disappear.

They removed themselves from the story.

“Find him.”

Daniel nodded.

“I already started.”

That evening, I received another message.

Not from an unknown number this time.

A video file.

I opened it.

The screen showed a dark room.

A man sitting in a chair.

His face hidden.

Then he spoke.

“Arthur Morgan.”

I froze.

The voice was calm.

Controlled.

Almost polite.

“I have waited fifteen years for this conversation.”

Lily stood beside me.

“Who is that?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

The man continued.

“You believe you won.”

A small laugh.

“Richard failed.”

“Marcus failed.”

“They were always replaceable.”

My eyes narrowed.

The man leaned forward slightly.

“But you…”

A pause.

“You were never replaceable.”

The room felt colder.

“Do you know why, Arthur?”

I watched silently.

“Because you were the only person who ever came close to exposing me.”

The video paused for a second.

Then continued.

“Your mistake was thinking the battle ended when Thomas Blackwood fell.”

A pause.

“The battle never ended.”

My hands tightened.

The man finally moved into the light.

An older face.

Sharp eyes.

A calm expression.

Alexander Crowe.

Lily looked at me.

“Dad…”

I stared at the screen.

The past had a face now.

Alexander smiled.

“You spent fifteen years trying to become someone else.”

He leaned closer.

“But people like us cannot escape what we are.”

I almost turned the video off.

Almost.

Then he said something that stopped me.

“Your wife understood that.”

My entire body froze.

“What?”

Claire.

Her name.

Again.

Alexander continued.

“She discovered the truth.”

The screen flickered.

“She discovered me.”

My breathing changed.

“Then why did you kill her?”

Lily looked at me.

The video went silent for several seconds.

Then Alexander answered:

“Because I didn’t.”

The words hit harder than expected.

“What?”

“I didn’t kill Claire Morgan.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Someone else did.”

The room became completely silent.

For fifteen years, I carried the belief that Claire died because she got too close to dangerous people.

But now the person at the center of everything was saying something impossible.

Someone else killed her.

Alexander continued.

“And the person who did it…”

He paused.

“Was someone you trusted.”

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Lily’s voice was quiet.

“Dad.”

I looked at her.

“What if he’s lying?”

That was the question.

The question that mattered.

Alexander Crowe was a master manipulator.

Everything he said could be a weapon.

But one thing bothered me.

He knew about Claire.

He knew things only a few people knew.

And if he was lying...

Why choose that lie?

Why reopen the one wound I had spent fifteen years trying to survive?

Daniel looked at me.

“What do we do?”

I looked at the notebook.

At Claire’s letter.

At the names.

At the hidden war that started long before Richard hurt Lily.

“We find out who killed my wife.”

The room became quiet.

Because for fifteen years, I had been fighting to protect the future.

Now I had to return to the past.

Not to seek revenge.

Not to punish someone.

But because the truth had waited long enough.

And whoever murdered Claire Morgan had spent fifteen years believing they were safe.

They were wrong.

Because I was done chasing shadows.

May you like

Now I was hunting the person who created them.
