Chapter 5 - The RecordingThe caller hung up before I could ask anything else.

I stood frozen.

Arthur was watching me.

“What happened?”

I told him.

His expression hardened.

Daniel stared at Brooke.

She shook her head violently.

“No.”

Arthur raised a hand.

“Don't say another word.”

Brooke glared at him.

“You can't believe a random caller.”

“I don't.”

Arthur took out a notepad.

“I believe evidence.”

He looked at me.

“Do you know who this could be?”

“No.”

“Any former employees recently dismissed?”

Daniel answered.

“Several.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Names.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then gave him three.

Arthur wrote them down.

Brooke began pacing.

“This is ridiculous.”

Nobody answered.

She stopped.

“You're all acting like I'm some criminal.”

I looked at her.

“You forged papers.”

“I did not.”

“You tried to get me to sign away my trust.”

“That was a legal document.”

“Prepared with false information.”

“I didn't prepare it.”

Arthur raised his eyes.

“Who did?”

Brooke's mouth closed.

Arthur leaned back.

“That's what I thought.”

He connected the flash drive to his laptop.

The screen filled with folders.

Dates.

Office names.

Security archives.

He clicked one.

A video appeared.

A conference room.

Daniel walked in.

Brooke was already there.

Another man sat across from her.

Elliot Vane.

The developer.

I watched.

Brooke leaned over the table.

I couldn't hear the audio yet.

Arthur increased the volume.

Her voice came through.

“If Linda signs, the house is ours.”

Elliot nodded.

“And the company?”

“Daniel handles that.”

“Will he?”

“He'll do whatever I tell him.”

Daniel flinched.

On the screen, his younger self entered.

He looked nervous.

Brooke stood.

“We need you to understand something.”

He sat.

“What?”

“If your mother refuses, this becomes very difficult.”

Daniel asked, “Why?”

“Because the developer needs clean title.”

“I know.”

“And Linda is the problem.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She isn't the problem.”

Brooke leaned toward him.

“Then solve it.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at the black screen.

Then at Brooke.

“You said you'd never met him.”

“I had.”

“You told me once.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When it was finished.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You were going to sell my mother's house without her knowing.”

“Our house.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“Her house.”

Brooke's face twisted.

“You never cared about us.”

Daniel stood.

“I paid your debts.”

“And?”

“I lied to my mother for you.”

“And?”

“I let you treat her like this.”

“And?”

Her voice cracked.

“You knew what it was like growing up poor.”

I turned toward her.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“You think I wanted to live like this?”

I looked around.

“This house is not poverty.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Brooke wiped her face.

“I grew up watching people take things away.”

She pointed at the room.

“Nice houses. Good schools. Families who never worried about bills.”

She laughed.

“I swore I'd never be that woman.”

“You became the woman willing to steal it.”

Her eyes filled with rage.

“I wanted security.”

“So you built it on lies.”

She looked at Daniel.

“He loved me.”

“I did,” Daniel said.

“Past tense?”

He looked away.

Brooke went quiet.

Then something in her expression changed.

She stopped crying.

Stopped begging.

Stopped trying to explain.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

“You think you've won.”

I said nothing.

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what Harold left behind.”

Arthur frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Brooke smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“I know what he discovered before he died.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Brooke.”

She ignored him.

“Ask Linda why Harold changed his will.”

My pulse quickened.

Arthur stared at her.

“Harold changed his estate plan twice.”

“Why?”

Brooke looked at me.

“Because of Daniel.”

Daniel went still.

“What are you talking about?”

She smiled wider.

“Ask your mother what your father learned about you.”

My mouth went dry.

Arthur stood.

“Brooke, choose your next words carefully.”

She turned toward him.

“You know the truth.”

Arthur didn't answer.

Daniel looked between us.

“What truth?”

Silence.

“Mom?”

I couldn't speak.

He came toward me.

“Mom, what did Dad find?”

I looked at Arthur.

He gave the smallest shake of his head.

Not yet.

Brooke saw it.

She laughed softly.

“There it is.”

Daniel's voice rose.

“What truth?”

I stared at my son.

The boy I carried.

The teenager who saved for months to buy me that mixer.

The man who had just admitted stealing from his father's company.

And for the first time, I saw another question in his eyes.

Not about the house.

Not about the money.

About himself.

“What did Dad know?”

I swallowed.

“Some things.”

“What things?”

I couldn't answer.

Brooke stepped closer.

“He wasn't the reason Harold changed the will.”

I looked at her.

“He was the reason Harold changed everything.”

Daniel stopped breathing for a second.

Then Arthur closed the laptop.

“We're leaving.”

Brooke laughed.

“You can't leave now.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Oh, I think we can.”

He turned to me.

“Linda, there is one final document in the bank vault.”

“The vault?”

“Yes.”

“What document?”

Arthur's expression was grave.

“The original file Harold deposited two weeks before his death.”

Daniel asked:

“What was in it?”

Arthur looked directly at him.

“Your father's written explanation for why he believed his son could no longer be trusted with the family estate.”

Daniel staggered backward.

I closed my eyes.

Outside, rain began tapping against the windows.

Brooke whispered:

“You're going to read it?”

I opened my eyes.

“Yes.”

She took a step toward me.

“Then before you do, maybe you should ask yourself why your husband was afraid of his own son.”

I looked at Daniel.

He had gone completely pale.

Then Arthur's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

He looked at me.

“Linda.”

“Yes?”

“The former employee who called you has been found.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

Arthur hesitated.

“In the hospital.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then we can talk to him.”

Arthur shook his head.

“He was admitted after someone tried to run him off the road.”

The room went silent.

May you like

Then he added:

“He keeps asking for you.”
