Chapter 10 - What Happened to HaroldThe police arrived forty minutes later.

By then, Robert was gone.

The storage unit was sealed.

Every piece of evidence photographed.

Every shred of paper collected.

But the note remained in my mind.

The heart attack wasn't natural.

I sat in the back seat while Arthur spoke with an investigator.

Daniel stood under a security light.

He looked smaller than he had that morning.

Not physically.

Some people become smaller when lies are stripped away.

They lose the armor.

The investigator approached.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“We need to ask about your husband's health.”

I told him everything I remembered.

His heart problem.

His medication.

His final week.

The strange fatigue.

The dizziness.

The night he complained that his chest felt tight.

The doctor had called it stress.

The investigator wrote everything down.

“Did Harold ever say he was afraid?”

“Yes.”

“Of whom?”

“He wouldn't tell me.”

Daniel looked over.

The investigator noticed him.

“Mr. Bennett, did your father ever mention Robert Caldwell?”

Daniel nodded.

“Once.”

“When?”

“A few months before he died.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me Robert had returned.”

“Did that concern him?”

“Yes.”

“Did he explain why?”

Daniel shook his head.

The investigator looked at me.

“Your daughter-in-law?”

I hesitated.

Then told the truth.

“Harold distrusted her.”

“Why?”

“Money.”

The investigator glanced at Arthur.

Arthur handed over the archive records.

The investigator studied them.

Then asked:

“Mrs. Bennett, do you still have the original trust?”

“Yes.”

“Secure?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

I looked at Arthur.

“Bank vault.”

He nodded.

The investigator sighed.

“Then keep it there.”

I wanted to laugh.

A lifetime of ordinary problems had led to this.

My son had stolen money.

My daughter-in-law had manipulated him.

A developer wanted the land.

A criminal had resurfaced.

And now my husband's death might have been tied to a plan that began before I knew anything was wrong.

Daniel came to my side.

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

“I found something.”

“What?”

He pulled a folded piece of paper from his jacket.

“From Dad's office.”

I stared.

“How did you get that?”

“I found it after you left the study this morning.”

He handed it to me.

The paper was old.

My name was written on it.

I unfolded it.

It was a handwritten list.

People Harold trusted.

People he did not trust.

At the bottom:

Do not confront Robert without Arthur.

Then another line:

Do not believe Brooke if she says she is protecting Daniel. She is protecting herself.

My hands shook.

There was one final line.

And never let Daniel sign anything without reading every page.

I looked at my son.

“That was written for you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

He looked toward the parking lot.

“I failed him.”

I wanted to say no.

But I couldn't.

Not yet.

The investigator returned.

“We found something else.”

He held up a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a prescription bottle.

Harold's medication.

“What about it?”

“It was recovered from the storage unit.”

“Why?”

“The bottle was refilled three times under the same prescription number.”

I frowned.

“That was normal.”

“Except the pharmacy says the prescription was never authorized.”

My stomach dropped.

“Someone forged his medication.”

The investigator nodded.

“We're sending it for testing.”

Daniel stared at the bottle.

“Would that cause a heart attack?”

“We don't know.”

“Then why did you say his death may have been unnatural?”

“Because this bottle was taken from a unit linked to people investigating your father's estate.”

Silence.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Brooke.

He declined it.

She called again.

He declined again.

A text appeared.

He read it.

Then looked at me.

“What?”

He handed me the phone.

I know where you are. Stop digging.

I stared at the message.

Daniel had been terrified of his wife all day.

But now I saw something else.

She was terrified of us.

That changed everything.

I handed the phone back.

“Call her.”

“What?”

“Put it on speaker.”

He did.

Brooke answered on the first ring.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

“Because you're supposed to be home.”

“No.”

A pause.

“What did your mother tell you?”

Daniel glanced at me.

“The truth.”

Brooke went silent.

Then:

“She doesn't know everything.”

“What do you know?”

“You don't understand what your father did.”

“What did he do?”

“Daniel...”

He raised his voice.

“What did Dad do?”

Nothing.

Then Brooke whispered:

“He knew who your real father was.”

The line went dead.

Daniel stared at the phone.

I felt my heart stop.

He slowly looked at me.

“What did she mean?”

I had no answer.

Arthur approached.

“What happened?”

I told him.

Arthur's face changed.

“I hoped she'd never use that.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Use what?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Linda.”

I stared at him.

“You know.”

“Yes.”

“What was Harold protecting?”

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand one thing.”

“What?”

“Whatever Brooke is suggesting, do not let it erase what we already know.”

Daniel frowned.

Arthur took a breath.

“Harold was not protecting you from the truth.”

He looked at me.

“He was protecting the truth from Brooke.”

My phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“Mrs. Bennett.”

“Yes?”

“I'm the man who called you from the hospital.”

Walter.

“You need to leave that location now.”

“Why?”

“I heard what happened.”

“How?”

A pause.

“Because someone is inside your house.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The police aren't there.”

Arthur reached for my arm.

Walter continued:

“And he's not looking for money.”

My heart hammered.

“What is he looking for?”

Walter whispered:

May you like

“The document Harold hid after he discovered who betrayed him.”

Then the line went dead.
