Chapter 19 - The Last DoorThe room plunged into darkness.

People shouted.
Emergency lights flickered.
Rachel grabbed my hand.
Stephanie grabbed the other.
“Mom.”
“I'm here.”
“Don't let go.”
“I won't.”
Agents tried to force open the security doors.
No response.
The building's system had been taken over.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Henry.
“You should have listened.”
I looked up.
“Where is Donald?”
A laugh echoed through the room.
“You really still care about him.”
“Yes.”
“Then come downstairs.”
A door opened.
Behind it was an elevator.
The display showed one button.
B7
Harold stared.
“This building doesn't have a B7.”
“Apparently it does,” I said.
We entered.
The doors closed.
The elevator descended.
Slowly.
B1.
B2.
B3.
The numbers continued.
B7.
The doors opened.
A concrete hallway stretched ahead.
At the end was a glass room.
Inside sat Donald.
Alive.
Older.
Thin.
But alive.
I ran toward him.
He stood.
We embraced.
I cried into his shoulder.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me mourn you.”
“I know.”
“You let me think I was alone.”
“I know.”
“You let Stephanie suffer.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“By destroying us?”
He looked at me.
“I made the wrong choice.”
We separated.
Rachel stood behind me.
Donald looked at her.
Then he began crying.
“Rachel.”
She froze.
“You know me.”
“I knew your mother.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I knew the woman who gave birth to you.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“You knew her?”
“Yes.”
“Who was she?”
Donald looked at me.
I understood.
He had known for years.
“You,” he whispered.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
Donald explained everything.
Her birth.
Her disappearance.
The false death record.
The years Henry spent controlling her identity.
The hidden system.
The money.
The reason I was chosen as guardian.
Then he told us the final truth.
Thomas wasn't the mastermind.
Henry wasn't either.
There was another person.
Someone who had funded the network.
Someone who had escaped every investigation.
Someone who had orchestrated the entire operation.
I asked,
“Who?”
Donald looked at Stephanie.
She lowered her eyes.
Then said,
“David wasn't working for Thomas.”
My heart stopped.
“He was working for me.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She began crying.
“Years ago, before Dad died, I thought I could control the network.”
“What network?”
“They offered me money.”
“For what?”
“To bring you into the house.”
I couldn't speak.
“So you did it.”
“Yes.”
“You sold my house.”
“Yes.”
“You took my money.”
“Yes.”
“You betrayed Dad.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
She looked at Rachel.
“I discovered I wasn't their favorite daughter.”
“What does that mean?”
Stephanie swallowed.
“Thomas needed Rachel.”
“But why?”
“Because Rachel is the true heir.”
“And I?”
“You were the guardian.”
I looked at Donald.
He nodded.
Stephanie cried.
“I thought if I cooperated, they would leave you alone.”
“But they didn't.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because they wanted the whole system.”
I looked at her.
“Then why did you bring me to the grocery store?”
She shook her head.
“I didn't know Thomas was watching.”
“You knew I couldn't afford it.”
“I wanted you angry.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew you'd finally leave.”
I stared.
“You wanted me to leave?”
“Yes.”
“To save me?”
“Yes.”
I didn't know whether to hug her or walk away.
Then alarms sounded again.
Donald looked toward the door.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
He looked at me.
“The people above Henry.”
“Who are they?”
He shook his head.
“We have to go.”
We ran toward the exit.
But before we reached it, the lights came back on.
A wall screen activated.
A live broadcast appeared.
Every major news network was reporting the leaked files.
Names flashed.
Accounts.
Companies.
Corruption.
Fraud.
The network was collapsing.
Then one final image appeared.
A photograph.
Henry Moore.
Standing beside someone else.
Someone I recognized immediately.
My own brother.
I stopped walking.
Donald looked at me.
“Margaret…”
My brother smiled from the screen.
Then the broadcast switched off.
May you like
And I realized the story wasn't over.
It had only reached the person I never suspected.
