Chapter 18 - The Real HeirThomas had finally said it.

“The real heir.”
I looked at Rachel.
“What does he mean?”
Rachel's face was pale.
Thomas smiled.
“The trust was never about the money.”
“Then what?”
“Control.”
He walked toward Rachel.
“Her bloodline gives access to the original system.”
Rachel shook her head.
“I don't want anything.”
“That doesn't matter.”
He turned to me.
“Donald rebuilt the system after he discovered what your father had done.”
“My father?”
“He was one of the original architects.”
I felt sick.
“My father created the network?”
“Yes.”
“And Donald spent his life fighting it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he realized what it had become.”
Thomas turned to Stephanie.
“She was supposed to be the decoy.”
I stared.
“You used her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone trusted the daughter.”
I looked at Stephanie.
She was crying.
“Thomas…”
He ignored her.
“The house.”
“The money.”
“The grocery bills.”
“Everything.”
He smiled.
“You never wondered why your daughter always knew exactly how much you had?”
I felt anger surge.
“You monitored my pension.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To make sure you had access.”
“To the vault.”
“Yes.”
The $980 grocery bill suddenly seemed absurd.
It wasn't about dinner.
It had been a test.
Thomas wanted to know how much I would tolerate.
How easily I could be controlled.
I looked at Stephanie.
“Was that why you did it?”
She cried harder.
“No.”
“Yes,” Thomas answered for her.
“She had to keep you dependent.”
Stephanie screamed,
“I was trying to protect her!”
Thomas slapped her.
I lunged forward.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Mom, don't.”
Thomas smiled.
“Good.”
“What?”
“Now you understand.”
He placed a black device on the table.
“Open the trust.”
“No.”
“Then Stephanie dies.”
I stared at my daughter.
She was bruised.
Terrified.
But she looked at me and shook her head.
“Don't.”
Thomas frowned.
“What did you say?”
Stephanie looked at me.
“Don't give him the money.”
Thomas raised the gun.
“I said open it.”
I took one step forward.
“Fine.”
Thomas smiled.
I sat at the computer.
Rachel stood beside me.
The system asked for the phrase.
I entered:
Forever starts tomorrow.
A second prompt appeared.
GUARDIAN IDENTIFICATION
I placed my thumb on the scanner.
Then another prompt.
HEIR IDENTIFICATION
Rachel stepped forward.
Her thumb touched the scanner.
The system accepted her.
Thomas's eyes widened.
“Now transfer the funds.”
I looked at the screen.
There were three options.
TRANSFER
FREEZE
RELEASE
Thomas pointed the gun at Stephanie.
“Transfer.”
I selected a different menu.
EMERGENCY DISCLOSURE
Thomas moved toward me.
“What are you doing?”
I clicked.
Every file in the system began uploading.
Police agencies.
Federal investigators.
News organizations.
Financial regulators.
Judges.
Every name.
Every account.
Every transaction.
The truth was leaving the vault.
Thomas lunged.
Rachel screamed.
Stephanie kicked the table.
The gun went off.
The bullet hit the wall.
Security alarms exploded through the building.
Sirens sounded outside.
Thomas stared at the screen.
“No.”
I stood.
“You wanted the vault.”
He looked at me.
“You opened it.”
I smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
“But you don't control it.”
His face collapsed.
“I do.”
“No.”
Rachel stepped beside me.
“Not anymore.”
Then the doors burst open.
Federal agents rushed in.
Thomas tried to run.
Stephanie tripped him.
He fell.
An agent handcuffed him.
As they dragged him away, he shouted,
“You don't understand!”
I looked at him.
“I understand everything.”
But there was still one question.
“Where is Donald?”
Thomas smiled.
Then whispered,
“You're too late.”
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
He laughed.
“You opened the vault.”
He looked at Rachel.
“Now they'll come for all of you.”
Then the lights went out.
May you like
Again.
And this time, every emergency exit locked automatically.
